why can't i play starcraft???? is it the modem or my computer

my friend just made me a computer...didn't cost us alot but when i try to play starcraft online something is not working...i can play regular but i can't play online. it works at first..but 5min into playing online..starts to lag bad...slowing everyone...just can't play online... i wonder if its the modem..cause im using modem thats like 3~4yrs old... or it could be something else that i need to change or get. can anyone help me?

That modem should be fine.

Is your normal internet browsing OK? If it is, then I can suspect one of two things:

A) You are using AOL, which works HORRIBLY with Battle.Net. Not much you can do to fix that except switching ISPs.
B) The server that Battle.net is selecting for you (it does this automatically) sucks. Look into programs that will ping Starcraft servers and that also allow you to choose which server to use. Use the server with the lowest ping time.

Of course, if your normal internet browsing is also sluggish or you frequently lose connection, then there may be something wrong in the Properties area of the modem, which will require additional troubleshooting.
