Why can't I play any windows media files?

Like for instance if I go to gametrailers.com to view a game trailer, the movie will load up, and say "ready" and thats it. The video doesn't play at all. I have tried reinstalling Windows Media Player 10 but that didn't work. Any suggestions as to whats going on?

you don't have the right codecs?

i dunno. thats happened to me. try to play a .WMV files and stupid windows media can't play it. it should play it by default without having to get extra crap.

But the thing is I used to be able to play files like the ones at Gametrailers. I used to do it all the time. Now all of a sudden I can't play them. And sometimes it crashes firefox when I try and play files. This didn't start happening until saturday I think. Before then everthing was fine.

I have this exact same problem on my desktop PC. I have no idea what it is, but I can't seem to play streaming video from sites that use WMP for some odd reason. I tried installing/reinstalling WMP10 and that didn't work. I also tried installing the WMP codec packs, but that didn't work either. As of right now, I've given up
