Why can't I log onto Netmeeting server MID?

No, not really. You simply have the latest build of Messenger. Back in February, BillG sent out a company-wide email, saying he wanted better security in his software, so the Messenger team did it...and as a result, MID gives a script error (yes, it's the "better evil"). If you have build 73 somewhere, use that and ignore upgrade notices...the main security fix was for something rather inane, anyway. With the latest Messenger builds, you'll have to wait until the Windows team updates the MID server so that you can use it again. No idea when that will happen.

If you don't mind using an older version of Messenger (v4.5), it's located here. Otherwise, I dunno where you can download v4.6 bld73...sorry.

Correct, Messenger is necessary for MID, and it's not anything like ILS.

Another option is to use Messenger for NetMeeting calls instead...right-click your buddy in the Messenger UI and choose Start NetMeeting. Works much the same as calling via MID, but in reverse. Note that you won't be able to do this with XP (Windows Messenger).

MS unplugged their public ILS servers years ago, but there are plenty of public ones run by others. You can find some here and here.

hi there. i have XP and my bro has WinMe. i want to video conference with him but he can't accept the invitation. since NetMeeting is built into XP, i can't run it in an alternate version of Windows (right click>properties>compatibility), so i'm stuck. Messenger versions prior to XP do not allow the option to "Start Camera", so i'm stuck. based on what i have read thus far, it seems that XP is trying to phase out NetMeeting with the new (improved?) Windows Messenger. any ideas? anyone...anyone?

You cannot have a videoconference using Windows Messenger with downlevel operating systems. You *can* have a videoconference using NetMeeting, regardless of your OS. NM is not a component of Messenger (if I understood your post correctly).

You have two options:

1. Have your bro right-click your name in Messenger and choose "Start NetMeeting" (easiest)
2. Start->Run->conf.exe, then enter your bro's IP address (a bit more difficult)
