Why can't I just play Oblivion and Skyrim as I wish

Open and "free" world does not mean there aren't consequences to your actions. It just means that you are in a huge sandbox that allows you to do almost anything you want. From being the bad guy to a goodie two shoes.

My complaint is not about anything related to my actions.

Then why dont the developers allow players to play they game as they want?

The actions of the developers in Oblivion is like your boss walking into your office and saying you are now a janitor.

You were in the middle of configuring an email server or VPN. And now you have to drop everything you were doing and go empty trash cans.

Why spend the time doing character development if the developers are going to throw a kink in the game?
