Why can't I install two scanners in WinXP?

Strange problem for you guys.. any insight would be cool. I was over a clients house and I was trying to install his scanner and printer/scanner combo and I kept having problems with the scanner. I would go to control panel and it would tell me that the driver was already in use and that it couldn't load.

Ultimately the problem was this. Both software packages, Lexmark and their X83 all in one scanner/printer combo AND the HP Scanjet 3500c wanted to put a file called usbscan.sys in the \windows\system32\Twain_32 directory and whoever got their's in place first would lock out the other one from installing or being loaded. This guy had both scanners working under ME so I can't believe you can't do this under XP but I am stumped. Any input would be great.

Thanks,

- J

All scanners in XP and 2000 use that USBSCAN.SYS

I have a Microtek and it uses the same driver file

ME had separate entries

Only way to separate is if one had a different connection, such as EPP or Firewire as well as USB
