Why can't I get into FF 12?

I don't get it...I used to be addicted to these games ever since the original NES one. I bought a PS1 just for FF7 (thought I'd never replace the SNES).

I got FF12 over a month ago, and I play it maybe one every 2 weeks or so...am I too old? Has the game over-exceeded its welcome...finally?

I like the license, gambit, loot system; but my major critique is that these are good systems individually. Taken together, they really cripple my desire to advance in the game. I liked leveling in previous games (the earlier hard ones before Sony came around), I would spend tons of time doing that before I advanced the story. Now....it seems like you have no choice. whatever....

I'm almost at the end of the game. I really like X but hated X2. The new features they added for XII really made me like it. I like the real time battle system and the gambits are great.

With that said, I'm really just trying to finish it at this point, the story isn't all that exciting IMO. I guess I just don't feel the way I used to about these games.

Like with any RPG, if the story or characters do not peak your interest it is a long uphill battle to appreciate the game.

I absolutely hate the console RPG trend: main character is typically a late teen with identity issues. That has been the archetype for many game publishers and Square-Enix is one of the biggest offender. The two FF games that I wholeheartedly enjoyed most (IV & VI) on the SNES did not have all the pizzazz (fancy graphics, battle-system, leveling-system, etc) but at least I liked the characters and the story.

I really enjoyed FFX despite not liking the main character or overtly colorful costume design. Auron, though, was a bad@ss. I have FFX-2 and FFXII that I still have not touched. Too busy between work, snowboarding, and Oblivion.

I have the same problem you do.
Loved all the NES and SuperNES games and even liked FF7 on the playstation.

Got ticked off with number 8, just started 9 and its not too bad. Detest X and X-2. Hate all forms of online games and that includes number 11.

I really dont think I give a darn about 12. And its not your fault, depending on what style of gameplay you like, the series has been going downhill since number 1.

I would probably get into the story (well, they've all been terribly written; this actually seems decent), but I think the system cripples story advancement. I ahve to spend too much time farming for license points, loot, and gambit bs to advance.
I go up a few levels, but as soon as I hit the next plot point, I'm still overmatched by whatever comes my way.
One of my biggest complaints over the PS ones is that they had become too easy...btu this is ridiculous. I really don't like the auto attack system of this. If I wanted the game to do everything for me, then I would start playing Diablo and click, click, click away....

The effeminate male characters has got to stop though. really is annoying...
I don't care if 12 year-olds play this stuff; why are we forced to care about the exploits of pre-teens to teens in these Square games?

I played FF12 for an hour and turned it off. You won't get me to play that sham of a game ever. Sorry, but I dislike the real-time system that they implemented and the whole feeling of being underpowered constantly. It's almost like they let some DW team help them on FF12 and their only advice was, "make the player power level just like we do!" Innovation is nice in games, but for 10 games, FF was all about turn-based combat (either in wait or active mode in.. I think FF6 started this?)... why change it? I guess since FFXI, Square stopped caring about keeping the continuity in their franchise (surprise, Sakaguchi left around that time). Just like FFXI, FFXII shouldn't have received a "number." Similar to how Tactics was just a subgame (although it wasn't bad), 11 and 12 should've been with their changes.

With the videos I've seen of FFXIII, the game looks like it'll have even more real-time Laura Croft like action :Q.

If I want a real time system like that, I'll play World of Warcraft. If I want an RPG, well... I'll wait for Blue Dragon :p.

The problem with FF12 so far for me is that the story is not that interesting. I have made it to the Sandsea and still don't care about the story line. I do like the battle system, but farming takes to long.

FF7 > FFX > FF8 > FF12 > The Others > FF 9

Bunching up FF6 and FF4 as part of "The Others" is pure heresy!

VIII didn't deserve the FF name. It was schlock....but I don't want to start a geek war here, so I'll leave it at that ;)

Agree. And V is also leaps and bounds better than the PSX games.

He probably never played them, or played a bit of them via emulator / PSX port.

No one who played FFVI straight through when it came out in 1994 would just lump it into 'others'.

I played FFV and FFVI when they remade them for PS. It reminded me of the Ultima games 1- 5 (6?).

Oh man...I loved FFX so much...God...

I remember one time on Filter on G4 where they showed which was the best FF: FFX or FFVII. For some damn reason, FFX lost! NO!!!!!!

Never played FFVII so.....heh heh. :p

I suppose it's tough to appreciate them if you didn't play them when they came out.

But for an old school FF fan like me (who played FF1 back on the NES in 1988), calling FFIV, V, and VI 'the others' is like someone saying that their favorite Star Wars film is 'Phantom Menace', then 'Attack of the Clones', then 'Revenge of the Sith' and then 'the others' :p

12's story is kinda bland compared to X

also the battle system doesn't get interesting until 60% in to the game... I was bored to death at the beginning during fights.

I am a old school gamer. My first console was an Atari 2600. One of the first games I bought was the text game Zork and I solved all of the Ultima games. The first 4 on an Apple ][+ and the rest on a PC. When I bought FF Origins and FF Anthology I wanted an old school experience. The early games were fun to play but FF7 was better and just happened to be the first FF game I played. Yes, I know the technology has changed but it dose not always make a better game.

This is my opinion live with it.
FF7 > FFX > FF8 > FF12 > (FFVI == FFV == FF == FF2 == FFX2) > FF 9

SW > ST:ESB > (ST:RotJ - ewoks)>>>>>> (ST:RotJ with ewoks) >... ( >* million) > the rest.

I've never understood how anyone can consider FFX better than games like FFVI or FFIV. I found the game flawed with the sense of limited mobility and the horrid dialog that I'd rather have been able to skip past ( KH 2 anyone ). This ruined the experience highly for me. I also wasn't a huge fan of the sphere grid.

EDIT: I won't even go onto how bad FF8 is :p.

I played through the Japanese version of FFXII, so my story came out of a translation!

Other than that, it's definitely different from all of the other games, but I still loved it. Sure, the characters don't develop very fast, and the story can be forgotten, but it's still a great game.

The only time I had to "power level" was at the end of the game. Other than that, if you steal from all the enemies, sell their stuff, keep up with the best equipment, and do enough side quests to get bubble belt, there really isn't a huge need to power level.

All I can say is play through the whole game. It picks up eventually.

I enjoyed it more than FFX, but not as much as FFVII.
