Why can't I FF this video file?

I'm watching some video file, and I can't fast forward/rewind it

Any idea how to get around this?

I think it needs to be indexed by some utility

edit>> this is some kind of windows media file i take it ? If so try WM6.4 by running mplayer if you have an older windows OS

If it's a (DivX-encoded) AVI, then the idiot encoder didn't encode with keyframes.

these are .asf files btw

You could use this, but it looks kinda involves as you also have to get 'asfindexer' and 'ms wm format redistribution pack' - doh !

Hey I just tried this on one of those unsearchable asf's. I couldn't get it to 'make seekable', but I could convert it to .avi which is seekable. I don't notice any loss of quality.

The faq page claims it won't work on all files, but the avi I made is the same size as the asf
