everybody knows that a PS2 has a 40X CD-ROM and a 4X DVD-ROM right? so the question is, is it possible to insert a software to the PS2 in order to make it read VCD's?

and also is software the only missing thing in order to make a CD-ROM read VCD's? cause I believed that for example if you have a Pentium 166Mhz computer and has a CD-ROM in it the only thing you need is a software to view VCD's right?

Well - I don't think the premise you state is accurate. The only PS2 machine I recall was a short-lived IBM model in the mid-80s featuring a 286 CPU and about a 2X CD ROM drive.

Whatever it is you have (P166) should be able to play, maybe not smoothly, a video CD. I assume you mean of the Phillips Cdi variety? (I have several movies in that format.) Anyway, you need a player to do that - I used Xing. Now I can play such movie CDs using Windows Media Player in XP by knowing what DAT file to run.

Yes, this should be possible.

Unfortunately, the required software hasn't been written for the PS2 yet.

The PS2 runs Linux, xine plays VCDs, xine runs on Linux, therefore the software is there =)

The codec may be there, but has anyone incorporated it in the form of a boot disc that someone can actually use to play VCD's?

I don't have a PS2 but this is one of the fixes in the latest version of Nero that just came out:

"Video-DVD fixes for standalone players. Video-DVDs created with Nero will now play on PlayStation2 and other previously unsupported devices"

Sorry - I wasn't being sarcastic - I just never deal with toys and had no idea that PS2 referred to Playstation. Now the question makes more sense to me. Thanks! :)

And DVD Video is not the same as VCD. I have a complete collection of VCD movies - they are on regular CDs, not DVDs. They were developed by Phillips and are also known as CDi. BTW, they play nicely in WMP in XP.
