We have 2 computers on a hub sharing on DSL connection through a Netgear router. I just recently formatted one comp and did a fresh install of Win98SE. However when i try to dl AOL IM, Gamespy and other programs, it brings up the dl box but nothing is downloaded. Tested it on the other comp and it downloads normally.

I can still download some Windows updates, winzip, video drivers. It almost seems site specific. Any FTP sites are a no go.

My Linksys NIC isn't great, but the PCI is running at normal 33mhz. Any ideas would be most appreciated.

hmm, well i'm not too familiar with netgear. but i have a friend who's sharing his cable connection with 6 computers in his house. so i guess the following is a pretty good way to go:

set up a proxy server on the faster machine (winproxy is a good program)
configure ie to go through the proxy.

all should be fine after this. but i think winproxy expires after 30 days, so see if u can find a crack or something for it 🙂

pm me if u need to

good luck

hey quad- thanks but I don't need to use a proxy. My DSL router assigns each computer on the hub a IP to share the DSL connection.

Also i can browse to my hearts contents, download from some locations, but any FTP site is a no go- the download screen pops up and then just sits there.

Do you know the port number for FTP downloads? Try opening it with the Netgear for that PC's IP address (port forwarding). If you have the Netgear RT311, also make sure you have the latest firmware, which is available at their website. It allows you do port forwarding thru the web-based utility.

hey randun- thanks for the idea- but if my router is letting another computer on the hub dl from an FTP site and this computer pre-format to dl from FTP-sites. I am at wits end.
