Never saw any of Kevin Smith's good movies. I only saw Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. Did not find anything there to like. I understood most of the cultural references and even some of the KS references...but spoofs and references alone does not make a genuinely funny movie, in my opinion. That's why I can't watch all those horrible so-called spoof movies.

I really didn't know what to think about KS fans and why they like him so much. Then I saw this video and I kinda like the guy. Might even watch those "good" KS movies people keep telling me about.

Its arguably his worst movie. And Clerks & Chasing Amy dont still have the cultural significance they did back in the 90's. When those two came out they were extremely progressive film making for the time. Today they might not even impress you.

But I recommend: Clerks, Chasing Amy, Mallrats.

After that its OK to watch Dogma and Clerks II, and maybe Jersey Girl. Just dont expect to be wow'd.

I am surprised nobody said George Lucas yet.

He really needs to redeem himself after the prequels.

Hmm, I don't agree with this list, just because I don't agree these are the top 5 getting worse.

Smith I'm not sure I'd ever put him as a top director although I liked some of his stuff, he deserves to be called out for getting worse though. Clerks II was the last one of his I really liked, I didn't hate Jay and Silent Bob or Dogma though. Red State was fucking awful though.

Apatow should not even be on this list.

Shyamalan definitely shouldn't be, and people were making this point about him like 5+ years ago. Boat has definitely sailed on him for me. He does know how to offer good production quality. He should aim to be Jerry Bruckheimer and take his name off and help other people make nicely produced stuff.

Coppola I don't give a shit about as he hasn't been relevant since Godfather II as far as great directors go and I'd say his decline started way before Jack (seriously Godfather III and definitely Dracula, and plenty could argue some of the 80s stuff he did, he just stopped doing anything really noteworthy even if the films weren't necessarily bad).

Cameron deserves to be on a list of guys that have gotten too much control and need to be challenged. Call it the "in danger of becoming George Lucas" list.

Ridley Scott definitely should be on that list too (Prometheus, enough said).

I'd personally put Nolan on it too because he already peaked for me and I think he's going to fall off big time (eventually most people are gonna realize he's a better Shyamalan, way too dependent on twists and convoluted bullshit). I think Nolan could actually improve if he takes on something challenging written by someone other than him and his brother, but I'm not sure I see that happening until he has a total flop or maybe even several.

Tim Burton I think should be on both lists.

Plenty of these haven't really gotten bad they're just not really all that good or have become so tired I don't know why you wouldn't just stick to rewatching their good stuff. You can basically tell if you'll like the movie beforehand because they're too dependent on certain things, be it story elements, styles, actors, etc.

I like Apatow and thought Funny People was really good so do not agree with him being on the list.

I have yet to see Tetro, so cannot fully comment on Coppola as I hear that movie is decent. Aside from that, yes, he has been very disappointing.

100% agree on Cameron. I can't even watch any of his crap.

Pretty much agree on Smith, though I thought Red State was ok. I thought Clerks II was really funny too, but he is certainly not great.

Shyamalan's head got way too big. He needs to dial it back a bit and let others help on things. He did some great stuff before and I think he could do it again.

No shit! That motherf@cker deserves to be number one. He did the original 3 Star Wars movies, with the last one being in the early '80's and that's it. After that was just cash grabs, nothing else.

James Cameron needs to be removed from that list.

No, if anything Cameron should get moved up to #1 with Coppola #2. Smith did a couple of decent movies before turning to shit, M. Night only did one good one before losing it and Apatow was pretty much ho-hum right from the get-go. They didn't fall that far and the world didn't lose that much when they took that turn into Crapville. Cameron and Coppola though used to be great, they did some amazing stuff and when they failed they went down swinging for the fences. Watching what happened to them is far worse than seeing the other three devolve from mediocre to bad.

Coppola made movies after Apocolypse Now? Okay, now I see why I didn't know about them.

If you haven't seen his other movies, lots of Jay & Silent Bob won't even make sense to you. A lot of it is self-referential humor.

Apatow's biggest failing is delivering such predictable product. You know exactly what you're getting with Judd Apatow. You're getting a movie about people who refuse and/or struggle with maturity that's going to be two plus hours long, and feature Leslie Mann. A Judd Apatow film has become as predictable as a Michael Bay movie. There are no surprises, and the material is so similar that it's starting to feel like he's directing one, long never ending movie slash Leslie Mann highlight real.

This is 100% true. Since I'm not forced to watch his movies I have no problem with it. He found his formula to print money for as little work as possible, good for him.

This article was written in 2012.

George Lucas was officially full of fail back in 1999. He's not even relevant to pick on any more.
