now thats a load of BS right there. look at all the threads that get posted here about various things that go unchecked. for example, the euphemisms for breasts thread. that wouldn't fly at work or most places.

Yeah, I was going to say, by that guideline, most of the forum members would be banned. 🙂 Although, to be honest, the euphemism thread has stayed OT and fairly non-offensive. I figured if it went straight to hell, the mods would lock or delete it, and that was fine with me.

BTW, jdogg12, your sig is probably bannable.

Here at AT, ignorance of the rules is certain because at no point in time are the OT rules stated. This is to ensure that Hitlers men, i mean the mods, are the only ones that know the rules and can make them up at any time. Writing the rules would take too much time since they're busy enforcing them and making new ones.

AT is PRIVATE PROPERTY. As such they can tell you to leave at any time, for any reason not related to the civil rights act (race, religion, national origin, and sex).

People need to get used to this. This used to be a given but in our new entitlement society people believe they have rights were none were, or ever were meant to be.

QFT. You wanna make the rules, get your own forum.

Has anyone ever done that?

You do the same on your property. If someone annoys you or pisses you off you tell them to leave, right?

It was a joke, she and I are both regulars there.

If i had 20k+ people on my property, i'd make a list of the most common/important rules with a clause on the end that says i have the right to still do whatever i want. But at least they'd know (to some degree) what to/no to do. 🙂

Funny how so many are easily able to figure it out.

You're right, lordship. I forgot.... with 41k+ posts, I should bow down to your E-greatness. Forgive me for asking to make it universally known. I shall try to follow in your holy footsteps.

It's good to see you're finally coming around.

We do not have time to write and maintain the Encyclopedia Anandtech.

Anything less would then have people that are being banned complaining that it is not in the rule book.

Others would be scheming a way to get around the rules and making our work even more difficult.

Therefore as others below have stated, common sense is the best policy.
If you would not advertise/discuss it at work, home or your parents, then take it elsewhere.
So you're saying that because there are no guidelines, people who get banned won't complain? Poor argument. Even if true, it is hardly a reason to avoid giving new members a set of basic guidelines.

And that set of guidelines does not have to be Encyclopedia Anandtech. It seems to me that Jdoggg12 is looking for something more along the lines of "if you're new here, here's a list of things you shouldn't do, ever. Other inconsiderate or offensive actions may draw a suspension or ban so tread lightly."

An effective set of forum guidelines does not have to cover every single possible scenario. It does however need to be a bit more specific than "use common sense, don't post about things you wouldn't discuss at work or in front of your parents".

Simply because something you might not discuss at work, others might. Something I might not discuss with my parents, you might. On top of that, the Anandtech forums have posters from multiple countries and cultural backgrounds. As a result, that kind of guidance is too subjective, and since its not even posted in a sticky or FAQ thread, its even more useless for providing new users a frame of reference.

Somebody posted the AT wiki earlier, right? That kind of is the guidance, and it's maintained by members instead of mods.

A new user doesn't know about the AT Wiki when they first come here. If there were a sticky with a link to the unofficial AT Wiki that would be one thing, but there's not.

edited for spelling

Yup

Saw that link, so if those are the rules, why not sticky them instead of only being able to find them by making a thread like this?

I'm a member of a couple other forums (R6, car stereo, fitness, etc) and i like posting funny/helpful things there as well as hot deals. But i've not had to watch myself like i do here, especially considering "how many times have you been banned thread" If longtime members cant seen to avoid it, how would new ones?

But i also understand that they're set in their ways so they wont change it, even if the poll was 100% they'd probably not listen.

Another Q: Why do they remain anonymous? It's bannable to point out who they are??

I would guess that more than 75% of the people that frequent OT have no blemishes on their record.

Then it usually only takes a one or two mis-steps for most to understand the line that should not be crossed.

People from non-English (native) speaking countries probably will have a better record than the rest. They learn to pay attention and understand what common sense and courtesy means. Different culture?

It is those that believe that they do not need to obey rules on the Internet that get into trouble because of their anonymity.

The noobs are not the one getting banned in OT; it is those that have a few hundred/thousand posts and months/years here that get into trouble. Arrogance?

This is what i've noticed... common sense can only go so far b/c without rules to hold both sides accountable, and are not subject to the mood of the person holding the banstick

There are some rules when you sign up. Other than that, common sense has worked wonders for me; 15000 or so posts and about 4 locked threads and no bans. Locked threads were parodies, a repost, and a post that was accidentally empty.

I would appreciate this as well. I got banned for editing my post after a Mod had edited it. I didn't edit his content at all, just responded to it - and got banned for it. I have yet to see anyone else banned for this or see this rule posted anywhere.

you just posted it, thanks

OP, I must ask. Are you new to forums or boards on the web? Do you not have any common sense?

When you're among a group of people IRL, do you just break out into obscenities? Do you just start calling them names? Do you pick fights? Do you shove porn in their faces? Do you shove your political views down their throats? Do you drop kick your boss? Do you act like a 3rd grader in a 12th grader's body?

I don't understand why you've received so much attention already. You keep questioning the mods and other members here. Just start your own damned forum if you're not happy with the rules on ATOT. You'll find out soon enough though that starting a forum and maintaining a forum (and retaining it's members) are harder than you could ever imagine.

Now you should stop posting and just read a little bit. The 'rules' should be easily understood in a short period of time.

Dude, no need to be a douche about it. I never said i wasn't happy with the rules, i'd just rather not have to read through 1000 threads to find all of them. I'm not looking for attention, I'd actually prefer to remain fairly anonymous. And btw, i HAVE started a forum, one for the local sportbike riders in my county. It's NOT easy, but a set of rules/guidelines help keep the place cohesive.

I think its funny though.... seems that the people with fewer posts agree with me, as opposed to those with 5k+ posts. Most of you that have that many have been here long enough to have the rules ingrained into your head, while those with fewer don't.

I'm not asking the mods anymore, just pointing out to those of you who think its so ridiculous to ask that its not so ridiculous. I'll bet you though, that newer members reading this thread alone will learn what they'd learn about the rules in 200 typical threads.

Can this thread pls get locked?
