Every system has its classic games. The ones that broke new ground and had gameplay that still stands as fun, even today. But I can't think of a single one for the orginal GB or GB color.
I broke out my original GameBoy games to play on my SP a while back, and couldn't believe how unkind time had been to the gameplay. GB games seem to generally have been poor knock-offs of the more enduring titles for the NES and SNES; ie: Mario Land 1-3, Donkey Kong Land, and those terrible Zelda games (any Zelda game not set in Hyrule just ends up being poorly executed for some reason). In the original Mario Land one of the enemies was actually a hopping China-man with a braided queue.
GB was basically the only option when it came to portability for well over 10 years before the PSP came out. I guess there was just no reason for game makers to try to innovate given the very limited hardware they had to work with.
I'd really love to go back and try some decent classic games if anyone can thing of any, though, so prove me wrong.
Are you CRAZY? The GB only had ONE Zelda (later remade for GBC) and it was *incredible* (and STILL IS!). At the time there was only the original two NES Zelda games, the SNES game and possibly the uber-crap CD-i games (of which I own two but I think they came a tad bit later). From those, the only one that could even possibly be considered "better" is A Link to the Past for the SNES and that is entirely opinion. I know three crazy Zelda fans and they agree with me that Link's Awakening for GB was better than A Link to the Past. I've played though it and Zelda Link to the Past at least once a year since then (and countless times in the mid-nineties).
Though they may not have held up as well, don't forget the novelty of having Tetris, Megaman, Final Fantasy, Mario Land/Wario Land II series portable games. Super RC Pro Am was a blast.
Oh, it's not my thing so lets just forget that Pokemon started as two B&W GB games.
Link's Awakening should be an undisputed classic. If you play it again, I don't see how you could have anything negative to say about it (even the graphics were pretty good for a GB). Looking for another undisputed GB classic with better gameplay than modern games?
Kirby's Dream Land 2. 'nuff said. Metroid II has an impressive cusom color pallete added by the GBC BIOS and it too should not dissapoint.

Super Metroid was actually a SNES game that finally updated the series' mechanics and visuals to be a bit more fluid than in the original. Metroid II was the GB game you're probably thinking of. I haven't played it but may give it a try, though the review I just read indicates that the control scheme is still very limited like in the original.
As for Tetris, it was fun but I always considered it be more a time waster than a full blown game.
You'd be surprised... It's actually more like Super Metroid than it is like the original Metroid. A lot of Super Metroid's concepts were already present.

umm ... definitely Tetris.
but if not tetris ... did you all forget about this little game called Pokemon ?
TETRIS for GB >>> Tetris for Nintendo
Multiplayer FTW! Even without the classic music, Tetris DX owns all though.
