why aren't slot-load drives more popular?

Everytime i see a slot-load CD/DVD drive, i wonder why we don't see more of those?
Does the tray offer any benefits over the slot mechanism?

In particular, does anyone make a slot load CDRW or DVDRW??

Basically, I think it's just that they cost more. Wish I had one in my Dell notebook... if there's one situation where you really need slot-load drives, it's on a laptop.

I have a slot loading DVD-Rom right now and I'm honestly not sure if I'd buy one again. It worked perfectly for almost 3 years, but then started automatically ejecting cds when i put them in. I really liked it though, the novelty made it so entertaining.

With a slot-load you can't do that cool "coke holder" program thing.

I was asking myself this very same question when I was looking at the Apple laptops last weekend. Damn, they look so sexy and sleek. Most fitting for ultra portables.

erm, me, obviously 😉

I use em for work... there are a couple programs that are helpful to always have with me (various diagnostics checks and boot-from-cd operating systems), and it's a lot easier to carry a mini cd in a pocket than a normal-sized disk.
