Why aren't Sandy Bridge CPUs discounted?

I'm looking for a new cpu/motherboard combo for a HTPC that will do a lot of video transcoding. Looking at all the reviews I decided I wanted an i5 2500K CPU, and of course I can get one. What I can't get is a motherboard (for reasons we should all know by now). So I started to look at Phenom II X6, and then I wondered how many people are being pushed in exactly the same direction? Wouldn't it make sense for Intel to drop the price of retail SBs while motherboards are not available to try and entice people to hold out for the next month or so while new boards come to market? If I end up going with AMD it will be at least a couple of years before I come back to look at Intel again.

Why no consideration for 1156 or 1366?

No reason to drop prices, they've already got superior price/performance with that I5 2500, motherboards aren't that far off.

You're not looking hard enough. I bought a P67 board a couple weeks ago from www.beachaudio.com

The big online retailers have pulled them, but you can still find some that have them.

Hello,

I too bought one about a week ago, an intel DP67DE as I only needed 2 SATA3 connections and this worked great... Im loving my i5 2500k system as it blows through anything I have thrown at it... I had a couple minor problems that the bros on this board helped me out of and since then its been all gold, and I mean solid...

Sandy Bridge are the fastest processors on the market.. Why would Intel discount them?

+1

the number of enthusiasts out there trying to get a SB setup is quite small on an overall basis. Anyone with half a brain would just wait a little to get SB, or as posted, search a little harder for mobos. Offering a discount can ripple through all kinds of places, like Dell and HP as OEM customers.......there is NOTHING WRONG with the SB CPU so why should Intel act desperate and try to discount them? If a couple people here or there can't wait and go buy an AMD Phenom, well, you can't please all the people all the time......

Intel obviously doesn't think it's worth it.

If you don't want to wait, and don't want to buy a first gen i7 platform, then by all means, get the AMD platform. It sounds like your workload is quite multi-threaded if you're doing a lot of transcoding, so an x6 should provide excellent performance.

funny how newegg has the 1155 chips but not the boards.

The boards are defective. The chips aren't. Nothing funny about selling a perfectly functional item.

Doesn't matter if the boards are defective. Plenty of other retailers are selling 1155 chips, and at pretty good prices (i7 2600k at Micro Center for $279.99). No point in sitting on perfectly good chips while competitors snatch up all the business.

No competition = no discount.

Buy AMD products! Keep competition alive (and prices low)!!!

I think his point is the CPU does nobody (but us early adopters if we fry ours) any good.

A CPU with no MB is pretty worthless. Yes a few places sell DEFECTIVE MB's that you can deal with returning, but i would guess few will deal with that.

keep in mind I own one of the SATA II broke boards, love it.. and dont mind the annoyance of returning it.. but I doubt most will do that.

As for discounting them.. most have it right... why? they may sell none for a month, but I suspect thats no huge lump to Intel.. a slight rasberry, but nothing more. As soon as "good" MB are out they will sell just fine im guessing.

Now discounted fualty MB's... with a free Sata II card.. there is an Idea :)

that's what TigerDirect is doing

@OP, you aren't searching hard enough... learn how to use google/search tools effectively

hint: start with shopping.google.com , search for the item and browse each shop

The Sata II ports are defective.. Not the whole board. Every SB owner on this forum has switched to the Sata III ports and has had no issues.

This hardly makes any sense. Even if you don't build a SB system, Socket 1156 / 1366 systems already mop the floor with Phenom II as it is. The next logical step if you cannot find a SB board is still an Intel build. Unless all you do is video encoding or rendering, even a 6 core Phenom II system can hardly compete with a solid 3.9-4.0ghz i7 870 / i7 930 rig.

AMD's processors aren't competitive with the Intel products. Their performance keeps them in a "budget category," not a performance category.

If anything, the AMD processors should be far more heavily discounted than they are...

Phenom II X6 1100T should be around 20% less than the 2500K, which means around $140, or lower if they want to actually sell a significant quantity of them.

Amen. An I7 960 System is a great alternative to a 2600K and it mops the floor with the X6's. I'm not sure why anyone even waste's there money on thuban. I guess because they see 6 cores and think its automatically its going to be fast.

Yea I would bet it is pushing people to the previous i7s, not AMD.

Intel isn't dropping prices for the chipset issue, it will be solved soon enough.
