Why should people who have no interest in recording anything on their VCR bother to learn how to program it or even set the clock?

If all they want to do with their VCR is to insert, play and eject, then that's all they really need to know.
Exactly. I rarely read manuals for anything, other than what I need to get whatever I'm using to work if I don't already know. I do exactly what you describe with my VCR because that's the only use I have for it. When I built my computer I read enough of the various manuals, very little actually, to get done what I wanted done. I'm not a tweeker, I build something I need or learn something that's necessary and then move on. I used to work on cars in my teens and early 20's but really don't touch anything under the hood any more. I don't have the tools any more nor am I inclined to use my time in that way.

yeah, i'm tired of people asking me to help them with their computer problems/questions when they won't even expend the energy to try helping themselves.

I'm just going to get this t-shirt and when people ask me for computer help, I'm just gonna hand them a pamphlet for this ;)
