Why aren't people taught basic skills in school?

I have recently had some free time to walk around the city I now live in and observe the inhabitants. There is not much manufacturing here, and whatever steel industry used to be in town is now either closed or highly automated. Most of the jobs are either skilled services (financial, legal, governmental related, etc) or menial labor & unskilled services (store clerks, custodial, fast food, etc).

With all the terrorist warnings and such, I wonder what would happen to all these people if a catestrophic event several magnitudes worse than 9/11 occured, causing loss of electricity, water, gas, communications networks, and transportation. I do not think modern Americans would cope well with such losses.

Less than 2% of the American workforce works in food production (according to the occupational outlook handbook I think the number is around 650k or so). Electricity and clean water are taken for granted. Now I don't think that Americans should revert back to early Colonial-era lifestyles, but I do think that maybe people should be taught some basics in school. I remember learning about First Aid in 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th grades. Why not other practical things?

Here is a list of things that I think are important: Gardening, camping skills (fire starting, water purification, waste disposal, local plants & animals), clothing & shelter building.

Edit: This applies to other areas of the world where modernization has caused the populace to become very specialized and often disconnected from the production of necessities.

schools can't even be bothered to teach kids how to read, what makes you think they could teach people how to garden?

:( This is true. I don't know what the literacy rate or average reading proficiency of the inner city population is, but I imagine it can't be very good, as the high school dropout rate is about 50%.

I guess we're all doomed if all the life support systems fail. I can't wait to move back to the countryside. :(

Because the drop-outs would no longer have something to resort to job-wise if things like landscaping and construction could be filled by people educated in the line of work, among the already stated reasons.

i'd correct that and say if the students themselves don't even bother to try to learn to read, why would they bother to learn how to garden?

they're already screwing around in school in the first place, why are they going to pay attention when you teach them how to use a machine?

school should be seen as a place to teach you how to think. vocational schools should teach you the stuff you need to know how to work.

besides half of that stuff you can learn how to do in boy scouts or something...

I think it all depends on where you are? If you are in or near a big city like L.A. NYC Chicago, yaeh, most of the people wouldn't be able to get food. Seriously, i think if nuclear war happened or a huge terrorist incident happened, that the Mexicans that have crossed the boarder will be the best off.

And people that are from the "coutry side" will also do pretty good as they are used to cooking with fire, not microwaves.

Then if they do try to teach kids how to read and the kid proves to be too stupid to learn, they have to pass 'em anyway or their parents will raise hell.

All this talk about lack of education is funny. From what I've seen on this board most members would die in the first few weeks and they seem to be well educated.

Well then college should only offer a philosophy major, right? :D

I don't think "thinking" and "working" knowledge are mutually exclusive. A computer science program at a university generally teaches the use of various design tools and programming languages, but with those tools goes teaching of problem solving, evaluation of designs, and debugging. Essentially we are taught some basics and then expected to use our reason to create useful things.

school should be seen as a place to teach you how to think. vocational schools should teach you the stuff you need to know how to work

Now that I think about it I am grateful that there are Amish folk living in Pennsylvania and Ohio. If anything really bad happened at least we'd have some experts in rural living.

And people that are from the "coutry side" will also do pretty good as they are used to cooking with fire, not microwaves

I would put my money on the uneducated inner city thug kicking your educated country ass and taking all your food.

Seriously.

Gangs would rule.

If society broke down, I would shoot everyone who came near me I didn't know and wasn't a hot chick. No one's getting my potatos.

Shoot first, let god sort 'em out.

You want kids to learn about camping and survival? Have them join the boy/girl scouts, that would serve the purpose just fine.

  • It's not the school's fault if little Johnny can't read. The parents are responsible for the kid getting an education. Of course, it's just a lot easier to point fingers, though.
  • You are suggesting that the school system teach people how to be 100% self-sufficient in the event of a catsrophic infrastructure event? That's hardly practical.
  • Humans are incredibly resilient. This has been proven time and time again over the years. I hardly think the lack of transportation or electricity would signal the end of the human race.[li\What makes you think First Aid isn't still being taught?
I have no interest in preparing for the remote chance of a doomsday. That's no way to live.

You think God is gonna bring some kinda apocalypse? I know I'm all for it.

The problem with "going back to your roots" and having to get into gardening to survive has been covered by James Burke in Connection. If civilization failed and you were forced to leave the city to survive, where would you go? Do you know where the nearest farmable land is? Presuming you could fight off the people already there, do you really think you know the first thing about farming? There really is more to it than throwing a few seeds in the ground, adding water, then waiting.

If civilization fails, we are all going to be a statistic.

Me? I for one welcome our insect overlords! :D

The average red-neck deer hunter would cap any thug from the city.

Schools teach kids how to be good employees, not really to be good employers. Hence why you see so many C students as business owners and A students working for them.
B students work for the government. :D
