I would think as a laptop user, you're on the go more and more likely to dial-up into the Internet. Not all places you travel to may have a LAN drop, but most likely will have a phone line.
As a desktop user, you're usually either a dial-up user or not. And if you want dial-up, PCI slots aren't as limited as PC Card slots are.
