RWD = the suck

Um, no.

What do you see as some of the advantages of RWD? The "fun factor" perhaps? I prefer being able to take off from a stop like a bat out of hell and the added stability taking corners over being able to do doughnuts in the parking lot 😛

Over AWD?

Gas mileage, weight, cost, top end speed, power loss.

Each configuration has its advantages.

RWD isn't cheap either. Driveshaft + differential = $$$$. Not to mention these components also rob HP and add weight, although not as much as AWD.

Umm what the f*** do you think drives the rear wheels of an AWD vehicle?

Advantages of RWD? Try weight distribution and more controllable oversteer as just the tip of the iceberg. There's a reason why virtually all race cars (except WRC) are RWD. For pure performance under ideal conditions, RWD is superior. It's not just for burnouts and doughnuts.

That's circuit racing though. I'm talking about everyday driving.

Everyday driving fwd or rwd it doesn't matter. If you buy a performance car and want quick takeoffs you want a rwd car. When you stomp on the gas the weight shifts to the rear of the car.... hmm seems the driving wheels are back there, this puts your weight right where you want it. This is also why on FWD cars you get such terrible torque steering with a decent engine, and can do burnouts so easy, also real cool to see a FWD car doing a burnout... ummm. An AWD car is great in the snow, rain, taking the twisties WRC... but the added weight and friction does take away from performance. If AWD was superior in performance to an RWD car you would see all the race cars including drag cars setup with an AWD setup, however this is not the case.

Actually, RWD is less expensive to engineer than FWD, and RWD drivetrains typically rob the least HP of all setups (AWD robs the most, FWD comes in the middle, and RWD is typically most efficient). A typical RWD vehicle sees under 10% driveline loss.

RWD is also generally more durable than "performance" AWD setups and is significantly cheaper to work on than either FWD or AWD. Plus, with a limited slip differential, launching a RWD car isn't nearly as bad as you might think. AWD might hold an advantage for 40-60 feet, but that's it.
