My GF4 couldn't play videos after the driver update where certain TV-out chipsets used would cause cards to not play DVDs. Not only did I find what they tried to do a bad decision, but I couldn't play any videos that weren't quicktime! Go back to 30.82 drivers and all was fine.

So I decided that you know, I wouldn't recommend an NVidia at least until the FX series is gone.
My GF4 died at 18 months later during transit to a new motherboard.
I got a 9800SE...sure, it softmodded, but then was having strange issues, even with only four pipes.
So then, 9600 XT. It was alright, but ATI's drivers leave a bit to be desired, taking forever to get to any real options, as do all the tweaking utilities for Radeons. I was so spoiled with Dets and Rivatuner.
Now I'm running a 5900XT, and very pleased overall.

I'd still recommend ATI cards, though not for 2d IQ. This Leadtek I have now beats even the best BBA I have ever seen.
ATI has the best for around $60, and the 9800 Pro is still an a great buy, too.

I was too. When I was using a sucky FX5200, I found that I wasn't able to play the Halo demo because it was too slow. I went into Rivatuner and disabled ALL pixel shading. Went back into Halo and it ran like a dream.... but it didn't look very good ;)

I got burned by nVidia far back in the days, even before the Riva TNT. By burned, I mean that I bought the card for $20 more than what I could have paid 2 weeks later. I've been an ATi fanboy ever since.

Nvidia doesn't sell video cards so you didn't get "burned" by nvidia! ;)

WTF are you talking about? You need an attitude adjustment. Watch it or I'll report you to the mods, and I'm sure there will be plenty of people to back me up.

Ive always liked nVidia more but I cannot deny that ATI has faster products. I was really hoping that the 6800 U could beat the XT, but it doesnt, yet. Ive always owned nVidia cards also. I had a 9800pro but i brought it back because of a weird shuttering in CS.

I've never been a fanboy and own both products, however I think this time around the R420 isn't worth the money considering it won't be too useful in tomorrow's games with no headroom to grow. It might be 'marginally' faster right now, but then one has to consider the maturity of the drivers is around two years strong.

I must admit though that I am a very loyal fanboy to that of women.

i was 3dfx person because of the voodoo2, which lasted me up untill i got my tnt2 m64, i was nvidia for the next 2 years, then went back to 3dfx for the voodoo5, because of the excellent IQ of FSAA. then, when nvidia bought 3dfx, i stuck with my voodoo untill about 6 months after BF1942 came out and i was forced to upgrade to a geforce4TI4200. i still have that G4 TI4200 128mb in my main rig and i will use it untill nvidia comes out with the 6800GT, skipped this generation because nvidia did not have anything to offer that was a huge leap from my 4200 and the 4200 still runs UT2004 at maximum detail at the highest resolution my monitor can handle while still being able to see it (1024x768) at 50FPS. ill be sticking with nvidia for the forseeable future, as i was impressed with their OpenGL support when compared to my 3dfx.

No. What are you, 12 years old? Or is that too generous?

With the absolutely awful Linux support offered by ATI, I guess I have become pretty biased towards nVIDIA.This is actually not a very good situation, since it makes me dependent on nVIDIA.The last generation of cards really left me feeling like a jackass either way. I had a 9700 Pro that didn't run worth a damn under Linux, which I replaced with an FX 5900 that performed no better under Windows, but actually functioned properly under Linux. However, this switch cost me an additional $300. Of course I sold the 9700 Pro, but at a loss. I would like to have a bit more choice in the matter, but when spending $300-500 on a vid card it needs to work well on all the OSes I use. It I ran Windows only, I don't really think I'd have a preference. I have had primarily good experiences with either in Windows.
