Plates, dumbells, they all seem so damn expensive, even on craigslist etc. I don't understand it? Are the materials that costly? I would think there would be a somewhat cheap alternative somewhere out there

In addition to that, depending on your goals, you can use bodyweight exercises, sandbags, boxes, sleds, kegs, tires, sledge hammers, big rocks, and so on. Plus, there are lots of online tutorials for [url="http://straighttothebar.com/2006/10/diy_homemade_gym_equipment.html]DIY gym equipment[/url] (use google to find many more). Finally, finding good deals on CL takes patience: I've seen some crazy good deals (solid power rack for $10, complete 300lb olympic weight set for $30, etc), but it takes time and luck.
 
I was thinking the same thing when I was in Sports Authority a few weeks ago. I thought I wanted some 25lb dumbbells but quickly realized I didn't when I saw the price. Maybe I'm stupid, but $1/lb seems like a good price point to me 😀
