To the idiots about the bathroom thing... Fvkc off. You ever been to public restrooms, or the ones at work / school? People are nasty. Some people couldn't care less about flushing or washing their hands, or cleaning up after themselves.

How true...you see people wash their hands with soap, use the toilet, and walk out of the washroom...I guess your hands just has to be clean to use the washroom but not for eating..

Unless you're incapable of walking and chewing gum at the same time, you can learn all those things while in school.

Help the elderly, help your community.

The help the eldery, etc, how to behave is the domain of parents, church, Scouts or other social organizations..
The "manage your finances" should be a part of every High School's curricula.

Well that's what janitors are for. You don't wanna put them out of a job, do ya? The only thing to work on is not pissin all over your hands. Saves the bathroom's owner money if you don't have to wash up, ya know.

So benefit your society by pissin' on the floor and walkin' the ****** out.

edit: and I sure hope you don't need school to teach you how to learn to use a bathroom...

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

There's plenty of college students who haven't learned how to flush yet.

Actually, I'd say there are plenty of adults who haven't learned how to hit the toilet.

I think one thing that should be revamped is Sex Ed. They should teach students how moth genders experience sex, so that people don't have to go and figure it out for themselves.
Damn straight, Sex Ed should be about learning how to have good sex.

Giggity giggity giggity!

The biggest waste in time at school is history. Sure, most history would be pretty interesting and good to know. But WTF do you have to learn that the Native Americans made beef jerky, for every damned grade.

The things you mentioned are for your PARENTS to teach you. If you dont have great parent's its not the schools fault.

I think all of the basics on each subject should be taught for the first 6-8 years in school. If you want to advance in any particular area than an elective should be taken. The rest of the time should be spent focusing on getting kids ready for the real world. What good is someone how can do algebra but doesn't know how to manage money or cope with stress?

Take history for example, I understand that it is important because history generally "repeats" itself. However, is it really necessary to teach it for 12 years? 1-2 years to get the basics down should be sufficient. Basic math is all most people will ever use, why teach it for 12 years? I think a well rounded education is very important, but I feel that most courses are drug on too long.

The best course I ever took in school was called co-op ed. In this class I learned about the job market, how to make a resume/cover letter and how to present myself at job interviews. We spent a month in class and the rest of the time was spent working at a job outside of school. If we got fired from the job we automatically failed the class. This course landed me my first job which opened many doors for me.

In a perfect world, your parents would teach you everything you all about how to survive in the real world, unfortunately these days with the majority of both parents working full time jobs there is usually little time to do so. Not to mention, not all parents are fit to teach in this area. Parents should also be teaching their kids about sex, however sex-ed is now taught in almost all schools.

Everybody keeps on saying that it should be the parent's job to teach kids these things, however, if you look at our world today, more than enough people fail at many if not all of these "common sense" "real life" stuff.
I say we are doing something wrong as a society. We continue to focus on teaching a child the square root of 109482702.993920999 and not something as important as self respect and social awareness.
The schooling system needs to change in order to make us better human, social beings!

I think the OP makes a valid comment about learning to use a bathroom. You havent been to a public restroom lately have you.

It is assumed that students are taught these things at home by their parents.

Well, out of what you listed, I was taught at some point in 12 years of regular schooling:

Respect, care for environment, recycling, how to drive, manage your finances, respect others, help your community.

Half of the idea of learning is testing your ability to actually accomplish something and stay on course.

Oh please....if anything I think kids need their hands held LESS. You want to be a good human being? Then learn some history, poly-sci and current events. Then you might develop your own understanding of what makes people good vs. evil.

Or go read a good book, and aspire to be that sensible, honest and good character; like Atticus Finch, for example.

yup. Not enough applied stuff in school, too much busy work. Honestly they could probably cut 3 or 4 grades out of school and not miss a single thing they're teaching now if they got rid of the busy work. They could then add a year or two on for applicable real life type stuff, and you'd still be done with school by the time you were 16, because of the years that got cut out that were just busy work

I agree.

In a sense, each subject can be seen as a sort of gym, where you learn to work out & develop your mwental faculties regardless whether or not you're interested in the subject.

In fact if you're not interested, then it takes more will power to hold yourself to it, if you can, which helps you to develop even more. I think most people just take a "W" though.

I would like to see school move away from rote memorization and teach things like critical thinking, logic, etc. History classes, for example, should not only teach what happened, but why things happened.

Good history teachers already do this (at least one of mine did). So its not really what they are supposed to teach, but what they are capable/willing to teach.

Yes, all of those things are so much more important than reading, math, and science...
