Why are we even involved in Libia?

It's a freaking civil war. everyone should stay out and leave them be.

i cant believe that a UN sanctioned 'no fly zone' is just a thinly veiled action to overthrow Kadaffi.

also, why did Russia and China go agree to it?

edit:
also, how does a 'no fly zone' translate into us bombing vehicle convoys?!

edit2:
McCain pushes heavier U.S. involvement in Libya

Cause there's oil there and their internal issues might affect our ability to get oil from their neighbors.

The Purposes of the United Nations are:

  1. To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace;
http://www.un.org/en/documents/charter/chapter1.shtml

Article 42

Should the Security Council consider that measures provided for in Article 41 would be inadequate or have proved to be inadequate, it may take such action by air, sea, or land forces as may be necessary to maintain or restore international peace and security. Such action may include demonstrations, blockade, and other operations by air, sea, or land forces of Members of the United Nations.

The civil war there was starting to disrupt France's oil supply since they get such a large amount from Libya. This is why they pushed so hard for this and why they struck so quickly and first to kick this war off.

Oil.

We shouldn't be in Libya, just like we shouldn't be in Iraq. If it is ok to invade Libya because Gaddaffi is a dictator, then it was ok to invade in Iraq. And we know it wasn't ok to invade Iraq.

I have a feeling by 2012 it will be an occupation, just like Iraq.

For the same reason that we went into Vietnam, because our French allies need help.

The French need oil too...

If Libya had no natural resources, their dictator could likely slaughter his own people to his evil heart's content.

The same people who are crying for us to go to Lybia are the same ones that screamed bloody murder when we went in to Iraq. Lybia has, what, 1% of the world's oil? But that's important to protect, right?

I mean, when Bush goes to Iraq it's because he's an evil, imperialist, racist, money-grubbing, oil-stealing, Islamophobe douchbag. But when Obama does the same thing in Lybia (for the same reasons Bush was accused (oil)), he's just saving a poor helpless society that can't deal with its own problems.

Total hypocrisy.

This is a UN action plus its not war...

It is yet another undeclared limited war, if it is to be effective, it will escalate.

So, UN actions get to utilize the US military without the approval of congress? That makes me feel so warm and fuzzy.

The Constitution says that no external force is allowed to influence internal US decisions. The UN can neither police inside the US nor direct the US to do anything, regardless of any treaties or agreements made by the president or by congress. A Constitutional Amendment would be required, and that has not happened yet.

So, your excuse is not valid.

That said, the president is allowed to send up to 50K troops wherever he wants via executive order. I do not agree with it, but it is what it is. A responsible president would not use this power.

We haven't declared war since WWII.

Dem's are raising the issue. I'm mostly with them on this. Obama has a history of making up and ignoring the rules as he goes along. Nobody can predict how long this will take and what resources will ultimately be directed towards and consumed in this conflict.

Another Afghanistan? Another Vietnam?
