What's a better way to commemorate a national tragedy caused by goverment irresponsibility than excericising more goverment irresponsibility in the fiscal arena. That's the american way

I don't have much of a problem with an extravagent memorial. I do have a problem with a government that handcuffed a proper investigation. $15 million vs $1 billion. Do the math?

Did anyone watch Monday's BS (the Penn & Teller show)? It was on the 9/11 rebuilding. The first problem is, it's a disaster there. Literally. Costs a lot to make it re-useable. Also, they're building the museum underground. For some reason Pataki and the LMDC want the memorial to be two big lakes, with the museum surrounding them under the ground. Why not just build a building or something? They're too concerned about the retail space they're going to return (who the hell wants to work in a bullseye that large

There is not a lot of justification to spend all that money on trying to travel to planets that would take millions of light years to get to. We are not nearly as advanced as the folks on Star Trek

Your proposal is that we sit around a couple millenia with our thumbs up our asses until some redneck spontaneously has a vision in the middle of their all you can eat steak dinner at Ryan's, grabs a napkin and a pen, and writes down the exact formulas for FTL travel along with several schematics of hull design for FTL craft?
Dude, haven't you watched the whole Star Trek series?

The Vulcans will contact the human race and give us technology that would save us the expense of spending money to try and meet ET before he even wants to call home. :)

I agree that all involuntary taxes are bad. We are spending so much money on other things, I think we ought to spend it here.

nope i still feel we should have more troops in Afghanistan (love to see the troops out of Iraq put to looking for the bastard)

but spending $1 billion is a waste. The family's already received a LOT of money over this. There does not need to be such a extravagant memorial.

as others have said i would rather see the towers rebuilt bigger and stronger renamed "****** you bin laden" or something.

With huge f-off guns on the top. Preferably AA.

In my honest opinion NASA is a whole lot of waste of taxpayer dollars. The NASA request for 16.8 billion for 2007.

You're a waste of the world's oxygen supply.

Seriously, I wish they'd build the two towers back EXACTLY as they were (on the outside... obviously inside and underneath the skin you could do a lot of upgrades). That would be the biggest FU possible.

And someone needs to shoot the policical whore that came up with the name "freedom towers". What a bunch of insincere plolitical bulsh!t that is

Word on both accounts.

Well actually I thought they should rebuild them identically except add just one more floor to the top.

penn and tellers last eps was on the botched rebuild.

silly looking uninspiring low aspiration building cr@p.

they are right, the best memorial would be to rebuild twin towers. to rebuild in their memory, bigger and better, not some pathetic defeatest glass bs tower with some cr@p museum. osama runs free, and he won alright. he knocked em down and we can't build em back up and fight on:(

same. i think they should build the towers exactly the same, except an extra floor. but, then again, i don't believe planes alone brought down those towers.

If our government is wasting so much money, which it is in excessive amounts, then what justification do we have to spending $1 billion? The excuse that we spend that much on other crap doesn't fly either. If anything, it is reason not to waste that money. Our government is in a colossal deficit as it is right now and adding more onto the bill isn't going to help anyone out here.

9/11 deserves a memorial, but nothing like this. If we can make a memorial for 70,000 young men that died in a war for $4 million, then why can't we do the same thing, adjusting for inflation of course, for 3,000 that died on 9/11 without going to extremes? It reaks of exploiting patriotic furvor.

It's almost like watching your wife spend your entire saving's and then she buys a brand new car and you just shrug your shoulders and go "ahh, she bought a new TV, frig, washing machine, and remodeled our home last week, what is $40,000 more?" That mindset will put us all in the poor house.

I hate taxing people involuntarily as much as anyone, but when you consider how big the government has gotten and how much increase in spending has occurred, this should be minor.

It's too much that's what it is. It's uneccessary, it's not like anyone's going to suddenly forget what happened and look at the $1 billion memorial and be like "Oh I remember now, what a great way to spend even more money"

Geez....I guess the thing that makes the project so expensive is real estate values in Manhattan. But I think they should just let it go. 9/11 wasn't that big of a deal when you compare it to WW2 & the Holocaust and of course the Crusades. So they just need to get some perspective and spend that $1 billion dollars on getting a decent administration in this country.

It Looks like 350mil has been raised in private funds. Just keep soliciting donations and I would believe that they could get a billion dollars without one cent of tax dollars. While ATOT members are notorious for flaming everything and I wouldnt expect (most) of them to help, America will.

I think our govt has become the world's largest non-profit organization. We spend money on all sorts of crap. At least they could ask for voluntary contributions rather than extorting from our paychecks. Yes, this includes the bloated NASA.

Costs seem steep, but the memorial sounds pretty attractive.

Reflecting pools, underground museum... Will definitely pay a visit once it gets up and running.
