and you choose to ignore that AMD initially had supply issues due to TSMC's 40nm process not being mature resulting in AMD increasing their MSRP and then Fermi being massively delayed resulting in no competition to AMD's high end line.

it's not hard to figure out why 5870 prices rose and why they haven't dropped much.

nice friendly PM btw

you also missed this nice little nugget in your link

You got a 4890 for $140 a month after its release with an MSRP of ~$250?

That's an amazing deal!

Nice price dude...(I had to look at it twice)

Where from?

About two months ago, NCIX had a deal on the Powercolor one for $400, but i didn't jump on it.

Then a couple weeks back on the HIS one, newegg.ca had a sale @ $396 incl. DiRT2 (something i wanted anyway), so i pounced.

Sword of truth? :awe:

HIS&

For Canadian dealhunters: get on NCIX/newegg's newsletter if you aren't already, & if you're really into saving, keep an eye on RFD (redflagdeals).
I personally try to stay away from RFD as much as i can though, as it makes me want to spend even more money that i don't have.

consolization of the PC gaming market results in advances in 3D engines stagnating and high end GPUs being more appropriate for 25*16 or higher resolution gamers, while relevant life of GTX 260+ and 4870+ cards are extended

Yep, that does seem true.

Hopefully Nvidia will launch the 384 (GF102) and 256 CUDA (GF104) core Fermi variants soon.

P.S. Does anyone have speculation on how well GF104 will perform in relation to 285 GTX?

I think its because ATI and Nvidia are playing there little price games again that they got caught for a couple years ago. When they got cought anyone notice how cheap video cards were ? Like the 4850 and 4870 were amazingly cheap. Now prices are back above $400..

Either that or ATI thinks after the whole 48xx craze that got people hooked that they can raise the prices again and people will stay on with them because there last card was so good.

That 5870 look's sweet, I'm trying to wait for Crypress/Fermi refresh but will have to see what the prices do. It doesn't look good right now.

Supply and demand. Pure and simple. When and if Cypress gets any sort of real pressure from Fermi we'll see the HD5870 @ $349.99 pissing all over the GTX470's parade. You might even see the HD5970 for the same price as the GTX480 just to totally destroy any Fermi sales. ATI could afford to do it considering the original release prices of $379.99 and $599.99, IIRC.

1. Fermi isn't competitive => no competition => higher prices
2. low supply

Your post is most stupid, http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3643 when 5870 first came out it was $379, some could be had for lower than thathttp://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3643.

It's been 1/2 year since launch, prices should've gone down not up.

Most people see Fermi as a disappointment, me included, so 58x0 cards are going to be in high demand. In other words, if NV hadn't screwed the pooch we would have seen a decent drop, but not now. I saw the writing on the wall last month, and even though I was a big fan of Green I grabbed a 5850 and I'm not looking back.

It was a HiS for $200 - MIR - CB. Why do you think I jumped on it? ;)
Made a nice upgrade from my 4850, especially since I had just switched from a 1280x1024 to a 1920x1080 monitor.
Hell, I got the 4850 for ~$105 shortly after launch (Frys PM + rebate). The 4xxx generation has been really good to me :)

But they wont because I personally believe that both ATI and Nvidia are fixing prices for these cards.

Prices and performance will line up perfectly.

gtx 480 500$
5870 420$
gtx 470 350$
gtx 5850 300$

But you can get a 5770 that selling like hot cakes for 135$ and 2 of them outperform a 5870 for 270$. You would think that this cards price would be
sky high considering how well it's selling?

Seems allmost to good to be true, for them at least. Sucks for us.

They are high because of no competition. Heck you can't even get semi competitive 285s/295s much let alone Thermi. Just give it a couple weeks when Thermi comes out and prices will go down.

Predictions
5830 $199
5850 $259
5870 $359
5870 2GB $459
5970 $599

Too high, AMD/ATI has to offer better price/performance ratios due to nV's better name and marketing. Much like they have to do with CPU's vs. intel.

Oh you don't have to tell my about RFD (im a member over there) cause I feel the same way. Dell's 14 days of deals or NCIX's weekly sales and all the money blown along with it...

Zebo ,I think you missed my point. I wasn't trying to predict prices, I was saying that they will stay high because I think both companies are gonna work together to keep it that way.

Where can you get a 5770 1GB for $135? (And I don't mean a 512MB card -- it just won't do if you want to "outperform a 5870".)

BTW, the fact that Juniper has never come close to seeing the kind of supply side pressure as Cypress is why 5770 prices have remained relatively stable.
