Why are video card prices going up again?

After seeing the 480 going at $499, and a 5870 around $420, what?! I thought it was suppose to get cheaper as time goes by, not the other way around.

your post seems pointless

GTX 480 price is MSRP and 5870 price hasn't changed being at $420

interesting, I've seen a similar pattern here in Canada too, avg 5870 price here is $468 out of 14 cards at ncix.com

I'm glad I bought mine in time.

Newegg is much cheaper especially when you consider they don't charge you PST.

True, I could have sworn ncix had prices averaging $430 last month....There's a supply issue in Canada as well...the premium brands like Asus and XFX are sold out almost in 3-5 days once they arrive, since they have better warranty...Even visiontek's cards are all out since they are cheap and offer lifetime...

Sapphire cards although in some abundance, still offer a shitty 1 year warranty...

I think the best bang for the buck solution for enthusiasts at this point is to go tri-crossfire with 5850s...They are selling some 5850s in Can for $299 a piece, not too bad I must say...

For those that have tri cross boards (16x to 8x speeds on all three or atleast two, you can't go wrong)...

$900 for tri crossfired 5850s with great ocing, plus you get future proofing at your best...If you are lucky, you can find some used ones here and there for a lot less, but after Fermi I doubt anyone will give away their 58xx series ;)

Well for now i'm happy with my 5770. With the PST savings and cheaper prices on newegg I managed to get a 5770 hawk(I run it at 1015/1370) for cheaper than I could find a 5770 in canada anywhere else.

Anyways as a college student I don't have the money to buy high end cards and upgrade constantly. I need to change the rest of my rig before upgrading my video again but I will probably go the crossfire route when faster video performance is required.

Well because fermi turned out to be a lemon as was rumored nobody is gonna lower prices on the 5xxx any time soon. No competition = lousy prices.

The 5850 dropped 20$ to 279$ free shipping, but the 5870 just shot up 20$ to 420$ for some reason.
I don't see the reason to buy a 5870 for that much. Just wait 2 weeks till Fermi is avalable and it will drop.

I am very happy I got my 5850 for 266. Wish they were still that price, I'd probably buy a second one.

Speaking of high prices:

How long has TSMC held the Discrete Video card GPU manufacturing monopoly?

We need some people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet to donate a few billion dollars (1 bill minimum) to some computer savvy organizations like IEEE to develop another processing plant somewhere closer to North America, or even Africa for a change, help the locals there...Train them and educate them to develop GPUs at their own plants, that will give TSMC a run for it's cash...And hopefully we then will have some abundance of chips... :D

Your post is most stupid, http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3643 when 5870 first came out it was $379, some could be had for lower than thathttp://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3643.

It's been 1/2 year since launch, prices should've gone down not up.

and you choose to ignore that AMD initially had supply issues due to TSMC's 40nm process not being mature resulting in AMD increasing their MSRP and then Fermi being massively delayed resulting in no competition to AMD's high end line.

it's not hard to figure out why 5870 prices rose and why they haven't dropped much.

nice friendly PM btw

you also missed this nice little nugget in your link

Given a tight supply we’ll be surprised if prices stick to the MSRP, and we’re likely to see e-tailers charge a price premium in the first days. Depending on just how high the demand is, this may mean it’ll take a while for prices to fall down to their MSRPs and for AMD to completely clear the backlog of demand for these cards.

if the 5850 drops 20 more bucks then it will still just be at the original msrp from 6 months ago. lol

this is a horrible time to buy a higher end card.

Too bad I missed the boat on that ~$222 5850 deal :(
Ah well, glad I got a 4890 last May for ~$140.

I suspected prices would go up due to Fermi being unimpressive, which is precisely why i ordered my HD 5870 a couple weeks ago.

I've been out of the GPU loop but it does make me scratch my noggin' on prices. In Dec of 2008 I bought a GTX 260 from Buy.com for $175.

It doesn't seem to me like it really get's its butt handed to it as much as I would have imagined by newer cards, especially for the price. Hell the same card is almost the SAME price I paid almost a year and a half ago.

What am I missing?

I too bought one back in Nov 08 for $185 and it even came with a game. that same amount of money today can only barely match its performance which is ridiculous.

and yeah gtx260 goes for as much or more than it did a year ago.

consolization of the PC gaming market results in advances in 3D engines stagnating and high end GPUs being more appropriate for 25*16 or higher resolution gamers, while relevant life of GTX 260+ and 4870+ cards are extended

ATI have been maintaining very high demands for the 5k series, hence prices are not dropping. Also there's no competition in their price/performance category. This is one of the few times where computer hardware price actually goes up over time rather than down, its weird.

Throw this in with DDR2/DDR3 prices and my wallet is in pain :(

Great. I just send my 5850 back for RMA - and I paid w/ paypal so I just got a refund - no exchange (paid $266). I'm screwed. So it's gonna be another 2 weeks before we see any semblance of droppage? I would surmise (and maybe wrongly) that just the fact that fermi has arrived will cut into ATI's profits, even if it's not as much comp as we thought. Hopefully that will do something to the market.
