Why are vet EXAMS so expensive?

I took my Chihuahua to the vet because his breath has been smelling horrible lately and some of his teeth are loose. The vet weighed him, felt his stomache, and stuck a thermometer in his butt. They charged me 25$ for that too. I mean, besides the fact they are trained professionals, if I knew that was all they planned to do, I would have done it myself. Bleh.
 
Well, before I went I thought it was either a bacterial infection, or his old age. They just told me it was his old age more than likely, and said I should schedule a teeth cleaning and getting his 2 loose teeth pulled.
 
Vets are doctors. Vet school is expensive. All the various equipment and implements they use on a day to day basis are expensive. As such, their services are expensive.

A scale, and thermometer? Still seems a little pricy just for a quick look at my dog.

Uh...vet's offices have a bit more stuff that just those two items. Besides, you're also paying for his knowledge; any dumbass can take a temp, but won't know whether your dog is basically fine or if they're some serious underlying problem.

Pets cost money, it's just the way it is.
 
And doctors do it too, my grandpa was the passenger of a van and they were hit by a truck, a mile ride in an ambulance was 600$, then the hospital charged him like 100$ for a bandaid and asprin, 4000$ for some CAT scans which sounds more logical with it being a very expensive machine. I guess they over price things they know you need or will pay for.
 
I look at it like this...

If it's so simple that you can do it yourself then do it. If you don't know how to examine your pet then don't bitch about it when they charge you to stick a thermometer up it's butt. 😛

But I went to see if it was a bacterial infection, they never took any swabs or anything to find out.
 
Trust your vet. I'm sure that if the vet had deemed it necessary to take swabs then the vet would have. If you don't feel as if the vet did as much as he/she should have then take it back over there and demand a $100 swabbing.

yeah dude, $25 is nothing, try getting a check up for an Alpaca!

For basically those same services an Alpaca check up costs about $160. Granted they like to kick whenever something gets jabbed up in thier bee-hind...its dangerous!
