Why are vehicle enthusiasts attracted to LOUD vehicles?

I've noticed an increasing trend, both amongst the hardcore car enthusiasts, the ricers, and the hog/crotch-rocket riders...

I'm sorry to say, louder is NOT better.

It annoying enough when the ghangstahs drive by and you can hear all the loose parts of their car vibrating cause of the base - and you can't even hear your own radio with the windows rolled up.

WHY do people insist on making loud vehicles? I mean, I prefer a car that purrs, so damn smooth that you can't even tell it's running. Not something that shakes the walls of my house as you drive by on the road no less than 50 feet from me.

It's called a MUFFLER. Ever hear of it? Without it, your car sounds like an untuned piece of junk...

Or in the case of the ricers, it makes it sound like you put in a little 50cc engine and you're riding a rice-rocket!

Rant off...

generally the loudness correlates with a more free flowing exahust which in turn gives you more power. I have a full exhaust on my bike with a fairly loud can (muffler, whatver) and theres a significant power increase over the stock pipes (good 10-15 hp)

You know. I have the exact opposite question. Why are so many people concerned with "quieting" their cars. You know how they do that? They restrict the air flow. Lots of air = good, restricting air flow for noise concerns = bad.

You can take any car on the road today, put a better and less restrictive air filter, box, or intake on it and it will sound BETTER, the way it was meant to sound, and it will get better gas mileage.

The other thing is the sound when you floor a car thats made to sound "muffled" and not make any noise. It sounds like complete a$$ when its wide open, and yet this is what consumers want?

Any way, if you think all ricers sound like a 50cc motor, you obviously haven't heard any of Honda's high output motors at high RPM's. My B16 sounds fantastic at WOT @ around 7000-8000 rpm. The B18C, and the 2.0 in the S2000 all sound frickin' fantastic.

I will forgive you since your not a car person, but more sound = more power. I can't believe people would rather have a quiet car that sounds like utter shite at WOT.

BTW, what do you drive? Try slapping an intake on it, you will fall in love with the sound of your motor no matter what you drive.

i enjoy my BASS. i dont crank it up in neighborhoods. mainly on highway or cruisin through town. On occasion if im in a bad mood or on my way out to a club i crank it up. I dont show off like most of the bassheads and ghetto fabs and especially high schoolers.

btw: where do you live? i can drive by a couple times.

My car is modded but it's still fairly quiet. The turbos really help muffle the sound. And it doesn't sound restricted at WOT either.

Yeah, a V8 should have a nice throaty rumble to it, but some people just make them annoyingly loud.

There are 2 jackasses around my neighborhood who like to drive around in their who knows what brand it is motorcycle at night, after 10, sometimes 2. It's louder than a mofo. I so wanted to take my sniper rifle out and shoot out their front tire.

Ummm, yea. If you have turbos (plural) and the car is quiet, then yes you are restricting something somewhere. And turbo car's are normally louder, not quieter, then their naturally aspirated equivelant. There is no way in he|| you could not be restricting a car thats turbo charged, if its quiet. Besides, chances are that you don't have turbo's (plural).

agreed-Honda Rice Rockets with 5 inch exhausts are not finely tuned motors. They're pieces of sh!t. Granted, some may be fast. But for the most part, people but on an intake and exhaust make a whopping 140hp. All show, no go.

Maybe he bought his turbos kit from wal-mart.

His would be quiet at standstill, loud at WOT. Thats the way it should be.

EDIT: Also he may have turbos if its a Audi.

Wow, that's great. I bet that extra 10-15hp comes in real handy when you are driving down a residential street or when you're sitting at a stoplight. It's bound to cut what...10 seconds off your daily commute?

what pisses me off is the exhasts set off all the car alarms in my complex's parking lot. so not only do i have to put up with someone's exhast acting like a Magic Fingers Bed Massager, but then I get to listen to the Alarm Symphony afterwards.

PSA: your POS NA 300ZX is still a POS even with the fart can. die.

That is 100% false. Turbocharged cars will ALWAYS be quieter than their naturally aspirated equivalents because the turbine section of the turbo is in the exhaust stream, mulling the exhaust pulses. An NA engine will have a louder, raspier exhaust note with the same exhaust system.

Read and learn.

All I can say is that the Turbovan is quiet at street speed, sounds nice (not loud) at highway, isn't restricted at WOT, and the Vandura is loud, but tolerably so all the time, and FVCKING SCREAMS at high speeds. The air moving around the van still makes more noise than the engine and exhaust combined, though. The "brick effect" :p

The escort is quiet all the time, since I don't drive like a little kid, and hang out near the rev limiter.

Wow, I always thought my 1991 Twin Turbo Z (hence the user name) had twin (2) turbos.

TT V6 in a true parallel configuration. 2 turbos, 2 intercoolers, 2 BOV's, 2 throttle bodies, 2 exhausts.

And since the car comes in both a TT and an NA version, and they sell the same exhaust systems for both cars, it is extremely easy to compare the exhaust note from both the TT version and the NA version with the identical exhaust system. The TT is much quieter, and this is common knowledge.

Well, a Ferrari is music to the ears.

A fart canned Honda Civic is only annoying. A GTO with open exhaust is equally annoying...especially at 4AM.

Hate to break it to you, but the monotonous drone that is a Honda motor at high RPMs with a bigger exhaust is HEADACHE-INDUCING, not "fantastic". It's not just that I don't like the sound of 4-bangers...I think my MR2 sounds pretty good at high RPMs...but the difference is that my 4AGE has a more complex and throatier sound than your average Honda engine.

Negative, they did not have twin turbos. It was a naming error.

Depends on if your going to run the turbos CORRECTLY. If their running at a decent amout of boost, you always have to have a BOV. Have you ever heard a BOV? Its loud. Besides, if you turbo your car, you usually free up the exhaust, because if your after more power then why would you be restricting it? Turbo cars become louder BECAUSE their normally bolted onto cars. I'm not talking about turbo cars that came from the factory with a much lower compression.
