Why are TOPLESS WOMEN tabooed in the US?

her209

No Lifer
I'm not suggesting that toplessness is good or bad. Just wanted some good explanation as to why Americans (US) view it that way while Europeans don't make a big deal of it. Could it all be psychological (the way we view women sexually) than anything else?

Edit: Edited title to be more "visible".

i think it's stupid. nudity overall should not be considered a bad thing. making nudity a taboo just creates pedophiles, perverts, and helps porn sites and the like.

then again, if it wasnt taboo, then looking at naked women would not be so pleasing....decisions, decisions 😉

I would say it grew out of our Puritan heritage - this group mentality that the body and pleasures are bad, etc. While America is a land of immigrants, the basis of our nation's laws and ideals is found in the Puritan ideologies - with Europe, the Victorian-style prudishness was more of a fad (like the hippies in the 60's here).

Anyone have a counter?

Nope, actually thats exactly what I was going to say. It all stems from our ancestors that were very religious and into self deprivation. It's getting much better though. Each generation gets more open than the last. We're already to the point of showing topless women on prime-time television (they're wearing those nipple stickers that are flesh colored) but it's a start.

It's interesting, it's not really Biblical Christianity that the Puritans were really stemming from (IMO) - if you study it Biblically, there are very few verses that really deride enjoying food or drink, women, etc - within context, obviously (marriage for women, etc.). Likewise, there are almost no verses that state that nudity is a bad thing (outside of lust or drunkenness).

If something is a stumbling block for someone in their faith, then self-deprivation might be proper - however, the whole Puritan ideology stems from Gnosticism (the body is completely bad, the spirit good).

Just my opinion (at two-thirty in the morning, nonetheless). 😀

I wouldn't mind as long as the women are hot.

Wait.. that's not the thread topic, right? Oh well. I neffed again.

Never saw that coming... 😛

My wife can walk around the hound without a shirt and bra on, and it barely phases me. She's a 38DD - but when she puts on a bouse or shirt that shows "cleavage", I'm like :Q

I'd agree with you...Now, seeing how you have these excellent answers, ( 😉 ) do you have any idea where this taboo that is popular in "independant baptist" churces on "modern" music came from?

Churches (as well as governments) are usually led by people who should have retired several decades earlier. Like most old people they tend to think that nothing should change, and that different equals scary and satanistic. Half the world leaders are afraid of those strange, metal flying things, let alone computers or modern music. The only thing they aren't afraid of is incest and childporn, as they already were busy with that 50 years ago.

<< haven't you seen recent obesity statistics? >>

Exactly.

Have you ever noticed that the people wearing the least amount of clothing are also usually the fattest? I don't wanna see that!

The U.S. is bipolar about anything sexual. On the one hand we are crazy for sex and on the other hand we treat sex and anything sexual as if it is dirty.

I can see it now: -CNN "Candidate minendo has won by a land slide thanks to male voters. The highest male voter turnout in history.".

If women were allowed to walk around topless, nothing would ever get done.

It's hard for people to take you seriously when you look like this 😕

Even if it was made legal in the US, not many women would do it. It has already been made legal in Toronto, and the police in Vancouver have said that they will not do anything to any woman who walks around topless. Sure you get a very few women who actually do it, but they're the hardcore feminazis who do it to prove a point and are the ones you don't really want to look at anyways.

Well, you could of course realize that the largest part of the excitement about these external glands of females springs forth from the fact that they're usually hidden out of sight.

As all little children know: that which you are not allowed to see, touch or using any other senses experience makes you long for a look/experience on it the most: "You can't see that late-night movie!", "Such movies are not suitable for children your age.", "Don't eat from the chocolate cake!", "Don't touch the fragile glass!".

Hmm... this means that the average male is hardly past the 'touch-it-when-you're-told-a-million-times-not-to-touch-it' stage :/

😉

That cannot be true in my case, I watch pr0n 6 hours a day, and spend another 6 hours at the nudie bar (I live in Vegas). So I see them the majority of the day.

jk 😉
