Dude, you got way too high. :)

Anyway, Sociology calls it social construction. Names aren't inherent to objects. As a society, we have participated in this social construction. As participants in any social group, this one being English speakers, we all have tacitly agreed that the names for things are the names we use. The way we show our agreement and participation is by using the words the group has assigned to the object. By participating in the group, we show our inclusion, and those that do not acknowledge the group's prevailing structure are excluded, solidifying group membership.

As a side note, I'm not kidding, if you get high enough, you think about some crazy shit. I've ridden this train of thought on more than one occasion :)

late.

To make it even more complicated, why are things called differently in other languages?

And why don't we just use one language instead of dozens of them? Maybe before 1900 this was logical, but now not anymore. We should decide which language everyone should know.

My vote is for English :)

Was I really ? Or think about it...Was I High or was I Low ?
Some interesting replies...what was the first word ?
How did English come into being ? Did it start with ten words ? 50 ? Was there a council that sat down and said ok, this is "English" .

Does it matter??? I mean think about it, we have to give things a name to reference them to, we know what it is, does it reall matter what the name is???

The word "computer" comes from the word "compute" which is basically all the computers used to do when they first came about.

If you look in the dictionary it tells you what words were derived from. Almost all of the english language was derived from latin.

Most language originated from grunts and body signals. As time progressed, different parts of the world developed their own dialects. This is natural because you tend to imitate those around you. Books and other forms of writing soon helped standardize language.

maybe a solid response has already been posted, and u can't recognize it yet because it is in a language where one thing means another thing in english, so maybe u REALLY don't understand what any of us are talking about, maybe all of us are talking about nothing but then, what is nothing?
