Why are these newer ASUS Motherboards give so many problems?

I have had an ASUS A7V Motherboard from nine months ago running with an AMD Athlon 950 MHZ CPU, and two 128 MB of PC-100 RAM.
I have used Windows 98 and ME without any problems.

Why are there so many problems with these newer Motherboards?

I currently have an ASUS A7V Motherboard with an AMD 950 MHZ CPU, Viper II Graphics Card, 3COM 10/100 NIC Card, U.S. Robotics 56K Analog Modem, Sound Blaster Live PCI, Adpatec AHA-2940UW SCSI Disk Controller Card, 256 MB of PC-100 RAM, and a IBM Deskstar ATA 100 7200 RPM 45 Gigbayte Disk Drive.

This Computer System has been very stable.

I now have purchased an AMD Athlon Axia 1.33 266 CPU.

Should I try to get it running in my current ASUS A7V Motherboard, or instead purchase a ASUS A7A266 or ASUS A7M266 Motherboard.

I would rather use my current ASUS A7V Motherboard and then purchase an ASUS A7N266 NVidia Motherboard when it becomes available.

What did the previous Message mean when it stated that the AMD Athlon Axia 1.33 266 CPU should be unlocked?

Just out of curiosity - what BIOS version are you running on your A7V? I'm having some problems with mine running 1004c and am wondering if a different version may be more stable.

Toonster,

I had the A7V for a while. Until 1005, it was junk for me. I highly suggest you update your BIOS to 1007+. I think 1008 may be out now, but not sure.

Everything above 1005 has been ultra stable for me.

Good luck!

Jonathan,

How much cash do you plan to spend? A7M266 costs quite a bit more than average, but its performance makes up for it.

I agree, my board was WAY more stable and ran a whole lot better once I flashed to 1007. The current bios, 1008_01e (if you can find it- check the asus german ftp Asus Germany ) is, well, current... no info as of yet. Anyone have it and want to comment?

JonathanF: Problems? Would you care to elaborate?

The ASUS A7V does not support the 133/266MHz FSB, and so will not support your new processor. If you do not wish to purchase a new motherboard at this point, I would suggest that you unlock that processor and run it on the 100MHz FSB with a 13x or 14x multiplier.

I have not had a chance to have a look at the 1.33(266) Athlon, but it may be that the L1 bridges are already unlocked, ie there is no multiplier lock on that processor.

I think you cannot generalize this. Althoug I just sold my Asus, and I'm very satisfied with my Epox and even more with my Gigabyte, I still think, Asus has the best quality. of course, as with each and any brand and product, you always can get a dud, or a lemon, or a Monday morning car. That's the way things are. Gigabyte, believe me, put a RMA form already in the manual, for the cusotmers descretion.:D:|:(:Q:);):p:cool::disgust::frown::confused:

My A7V ran perfectly stable for the past 4 months, with a T'bird 800 @ 945, that is until my drive crashed twice. Asus felt it was a IDE controller problem since I replaced every cable and flashed every bios known to mankind (not the wrestler).

I got an MSI K7T Turbo R cause I did not want to be down a computer for the time it takes to ship it across the US, inspect and/or repair, and ship it back. Besides my temps being lower, I now have RAID and onboard sound. I am not a gamer, but have usually been satisfied with Asus back to at least my old P-90 days.

Fun part is for $40 or so I can get a Duron a putz with that in another machine.

Thats also because 1004 and under had a problem that caused problems, mainly lockups with MSIE.
