Why are there worse drivers in poor neighborhoods?

Seems as though people just don't give a f--- about anyone else when driving in bad/poor neighborhoods..is it that they just don't care? Or something else?

'Double/triple park? No problem! I don't give a f---! I need to go into this here mini mart to get something.'

I drive through a little rough patch of town to work and the poor driving and/or lack of general driving ettiquite show up every day, manifesting in a myriad of ways..

I wouldn't call double parking a sign of bad driving, just a symptom of neighborhoods with no parking (I imagine frequently the result of rows upon rows of 3-4 family houses and apartment buildings that weren't built with the idea that every apartment would be filled with people driving 1-2 cars in mind)

my neighborhood probably had amazing parking 50 years ago when each household had maybe one car, the parents walked to work at the factories, and the kids rode their bikes wherever they wanted to go... now, both parents have their own cars plus the kids have their own cars.

It's not just in poor neighborhoods it's just inconsiderate people. You see it all the time in the west side of LA, women who drive Mercedes or BMW SUV's and park where ever they want and drive how they want because they've been spoiled their whole life they feel they can do whatever they want.

Poor people in general are not as educated and/or intelligent, part of the reason they are poor and, not surprisingly, part of the reason they suck at driving.

Short answer: People give less of a shit about pretty much everything in poor neighborhoods.

Long answer: I knew a lot of guys in the Navy who came from shitty backgrounds. The main reason they are there is because they want more out of life. The guys who actually get more out of life and make something of themselves never go back to their old neighborhoods. They get good jobs and live better lives and leave behind their old bullshit.

They are approximately .1% of their population. Sad but true.

I think the cause is that poor people as a whole (note that there are plenty of poor people that don't fit this generalization) are more likely to make worse choices. Some of these worse choices make them poor, others are just to do things that we think are bad decisions.

While there are many reasons why people can be poor, making bad decisions is easily the most common and it tends to affect many aspects of their lives. People that consistently make good decisions are significantly more likely to do better financially.

Its not just double parking. I see drivers in oncoming traffic swerve way out of the double yellow line to avoid a little pothole, or drivers making k-turns in really bad places.
Or even just not paying attention to the road, driving in between lanes.

I agree.
And that statement has been the catalyst for many arguments over the years.
I try to not even have such conversations any more. I'm too busy working hard to make something of myself.

Seriously... poor people don't drive any worse than rich people. Go down to Newport Beach and watch all the idiots in their 60k-500k cars having no clue wtf they're doing. I drove no differently in my 91 Dodge Dynasty than I did in my 2007 Dodge Ram. One was exponentially more expensive than the other. Idiots drive like idiots and it just so happens that the world is full of idiots.

Seriously where are you guys getting this poor people suck at driving thing? I know far more people who have been involved in accidents with cops than with people who can't afford insurance or what you would consider "poor". Does this make cops bad drivers? No.

Bad drivers are populated by women and men who are idiots. Yes there are women who are exceptions to the rule, but that's why we say "exception to the rule".

I love it how any time someone shares their personal observations some champion of justice starts saying "You cant indict an entire people, racist, stereotype blah blah blah!!!!"

You folks need to look up Straw Man on wikipedia or something.

shortylickens, this entire thread is based on that shit... where are ANYONE elses sources? They don't exist or at least they haven't been offered up yet. I personally just think idiots are terrible drivers and most poor people happen to be idiots so you'll probably find a lot of poor idiot drivers. Just so happens though many well off people are fucking idiots as well, as are middle class. The only groups of people I'm willing to say are bad drivers are women and Mexicans. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but that's why we say "exception to the rule".

You do realize that no one has said anything about causing accidents until you, right? The OP was only about doing things that most people consider rude.

Maybe we should ask ourselves why poor people don't know how to properly cross any street? 😀

from my experience poor people have harder attitudes, their views, sometimes skewed or absent of logic, leans towards what they deal with in life and cannot ignore. So basically, yeah, they really don't give a crap and also what Loki8481 said about less parking for older neighborhoods. But the question is..why should they give a crap?

I agree that bad driving has very little to do with intelligence. Bad driving often means the driver is a me-bitch who just doesn't give a f_ _ _ about you.

In general areas high in crime are also poorer. Where real crime is high, police don't bother with traffic and parking tickets... so people act accordingly.

Poor people don't use crosswalks either. Driving through the ghetto is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Having lived in a variety of economic places, I think the drivers here in expensive suburbia are the worst by far. Sports dads and soccer moms are the pits.

This is getting off the original subject but one poster mentioned that poor people care less about everyone and everything around them. I would agree..the bad parts of town are littered with lots of broken glass and garbage.

There was an article in the Economist some months ago about a psychologist who did an experiment on crime in different environments. Conclusion was that if the environment is dirty(say, with litter and detritus), crime is much more likely to occur than if the environment was clean.

Bad neighborhoods simply seem to stay bad because it's in it's nature to stay bad?

What? No one says anything about playing basketball on the street and walking 3 to 4 wide on the street yet?
