Why are there so many fat poor people?

It seems to me that in the USA, the vast majority of poor people are obese, some are like refrigerators. Are they poor because they spend all their money on food? Do you think it's fair that poor people get welfare checks and government assistance, then go stuff their face to the tune of 4000+ calories a day?

It could be said that fat poor people are akin to economic black holes, they just keep sucking and sucking in matter, and resources and don't really contribute anything back to society. One of my goals in life is to give to society more than I take. When they put me in the ground, I want to be a net plus to the world. A lot of people have to be that way in order to make up for the fat, black hole like poor people.

Now, skinny poor people, say what you will, but they're not spending their govt assistance on 6 dollar cones and Cold Stone Rip Off Creamery.

Your take?

Cheap food is not good for you. Working families can't shop at organic markets and cook for an hour per meal. They throw some pork chops in the oven and eat. I eat like I'm poor, but my wife and I are just lazy 🙂

Your making the assumption that because someone is poor they are actually budgeting thier grocery money and buying the cheapest type of food available. Not true at all. I used to shop at stores that made a majority of thier money off of food stamps. Most people would buy cartloads of junk food. Besides, since when do people shop wisely when spending someone elses money?

It's a big myth perpetuated by advertisers that healthy food costs more, its meant to trick rich white folk into shopping at these "organic" food marts and pay a premium for the same old stuff they used to buy, except now with fancy "organic" labels on them. Almost as stupid as buying bottled water for everyday use.

Natural foods, you know, the sort of stuff that has been around for centuries, aka Milk, Eggs, Meat, Fruits & Vegetables, are not expensive if you shop wisely. As long as you stay away from the processed foods, aka the stuff you toss in the microwave for 3 minutes and you have a dinner, you can eat quite healthy on a small budget. Trust me, I was a broke Div I athlete in college, I spent a few years breaking down nutrition and money.

That's what I was always taught: Be an asset not a liability... And teach my kids at every opportunity. Poverty in and of itself does'nt cause obese but a combination of complicated factors.

Deit.
Lack of strenous excercise in modern workplace.
Lack of modivation to excersise.

I disagree with your thesis that poor people are fat in particular. Seems to cross all income levels. The poor in this country can eat thanks to charity and social programs and they eat the same junk most people eat which makes them fat. They lead the same physically inactive lifestyle most americans lead.

Train is correct. Quite a few of the very best foods from a nutritional stand point, are very inexpensive; rice, tuna, kidney beans, oatmeal, yams, potatos, eggs and such. (Trust me, as a former competitive powerlifter & bodybuilder for years, I had to spend most of my money on steriods, so I had to eat good but eat cheap.) Those foods do require preperation though and that takes time and effort. In general, the most convenient foods are the poorest quality... in general, not always.

So why are so many poor people fat? Lifestyle.

lol

It's easy to eat healthy AND cheap. I do it every day and I'm in college (read POOR AS SH1T). Oatmeal, chicken, rice, fruit (apples 79c a pound) and plenty of other food is cheap and good for you. You don't have to eat like king in order to eat WELL. Also, clipping coupons and watching sales help a lot.

Golden Arches?

oh, and laziness. If people are too lazy to earn a living, you think they are motivated enough to prepare food, watch what they eat and exercise?

not that many people know how to cook well

i'm brown so a rice cooker and basmati rice is a given

the 2 dollars CAN for a dozen corn in August was great, I spent 10 dollars on corn

plus no tax on healthy items/ staples

that said vegetables can be kind of pricey and with natural foods you have to deal with spoilage

but the poor tend to be more fat that the more economically successful

plus fast food in the states is dirt cheap, addictive and the nutional equivalent of a nuclear bomb

i've been killing the apples (we get them for as low as 60 cents a pound) and grapes (a dollar a pound) as well, even our un-free market dairy is fairy cheap

Baloney.

Latest statistics show the RICH are getting fatter FASTER THAN EVER.

My question is...why are there so many uninformed idiots running around AT?

quoted from link

For all racial and ethnic groups combined, women of lower socioeconomic status (income < 130 percent of poverty threshold) are approximately 50% more likely to be obese than those of higher socioeconomic status.

Non-Hispanic white adolescents from lower income families experience a greater prevalence of overweight than those from higher income families.

Obesity and lack of financial success aren't dissimilar... both are often the result of poor discipline and a focus on the present rather than the future. The corellation isn't surprising.

challenge yourself, get your running shoes and hit the road, stop feeling sorry for yourself fat ass, get salad and dont eat the fry stuff.

Having been raised poor, most of the foods we had when I was a kid are now health foods. Iced tea instead of cola is much cheaper. Dried beans instead of pork chops are much cheaper. Chicken instead of beef steak is much cheaper. Vinegar on a salad is much cheaper than fatty dressings. I could go on and on. Poor people are that way either because they can't manage resources or simply don't see the need. Spending the money on cigarettes instead of heaqlthy food is another reason. Ever notice how many poor people smoke?

Cheap cuts of beef are much better down here than the expensive ones were in Washington, DC. Another thing thaqt people on welfare miss is the exercize of work. Citizens of Ukraine eat really poor gradee food, but are healthy and slender. The reason: They use public transportation and that involves a lot of time spent walking.

the usatoday's definition of obesity is not standard, nutritionists can also use percentage over ideal weight

for my height (5-10), the recommended weight is about 152, you would be obese at 177, which is 25 lbs more

Ah-nold is obese according to these experts who say Americans are so fat. Just FYI.

Think on it. I'm 6'2" and weigh a healthy (almost skinny) 175 lbs (22.5 BMI). And 30 lbs. over a healthy weight is considered obese. So supposedly, if I gained to 205 lbs., I would be obese. Does anyone really believe that?

yeah well muscle is denser than fat but I doubt we are a significant part of the population

most people don't properly build muscle mass

I could hit my "obese" levels in about 2 years, it would be all muscle though I wonder since its still mass so its a load on the heart
