Why are there so many depressed people?

There is 10 times more major depression in people born after 1945 than in those born before. This clearly shows that the root cause of most depression is not a chemical imbalance.

Facts on major depression

I've never seen so many pessimistic, "half-empty", sky is falling, gloom and doom, hand-wringing, whiners as I have on this forum.

Why all the angst?

People have always been depressed rip it's called science and understanding of human nature.
Ever heard of the psychiatric field? New thing. People who were depressed before were told to stfu and stop whining becasue of ignorance. I guess electroshock therapy was good for the pessimistic, "half-empty", sky is falling, gloom and doom, hand-wringing, whiners huh rip?

Is there a way to ignore rips posts altogether on AT? His ignorance and bigotry and spam is getting old.
oh whoes me, my kingdom for a killfile...

I'm not denying that people haven't always been depressed, but why is depression up so dramatically?

Just look at teen suicide rates:

In 1996, more teenagers and young adults died of suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung disease combined.

In 1996, suicide was the second-leading cause of death among college students, the third-leading cause of death among those aged 15 to 24 years, and the fourth- leading cause of death among those aged 10 to 14 years.

From 1980 to 1996, the rate of suicide among African-American males aged 15 to 19 years increased by 105 percent.

It is a hopeful sign that while the incidence of suicide among adolescents and young adults nearly tripled from 1965 to 1987, teen suicide rates in the past ten years have actually been declining, possibly due to increased recognition and treatment. (1996 is the most recent year for which suicide statistics are available.)

Teenage Suicide

I think there are many factors.

One has to have a genetic predisposition to depression.

9-11 put the whole country on edge

The economy sucks, I know many many people that live on credit, paycheck to paycheck, and don't have enough retirement savings.

Actually, I think the economy is a huge part of it, typically consumers dig us out of recessions with increased spending, but personal debit is so high, there is no disposable income & many many people have maxed out their credit, a rebound in the economy from increased consumer spending is going to be tough to pull off, especially with intrest rats creeping up, and they'll need to continue climbing to fight a falling dollar & fewer countries willing to prop us up by buying the dollar.

The election was a white knuckle affair, I was resigned to accept the fact that Bush might not win, but I think many folks never even considered a Kerry loss.

Our nation is at war.

Because...
1. the social fabric is unwinding
2. the nuclear family is under siege
3. the actions of the many institutions we look up to are turning us into cynics.
4. The cultural Evolution frowns upon the natural high that is human nature. Instead people prefer articifial downers. This may come from the fact that, compared with those that have experienced relatively harder times, we are a spoiled society. You don't know (or appreciate) what you have until it's gone.

I have never known someone to kil lthemselves over something BIG, it's always a stupid rash choice of a person who "had so much to look forward to"
it's a easy chickenshit way out for people who can not deal. Not much diffrent then people who escape by doing heroin. (and ends in the same way 99% of the time.)

Oh, and Moose....what are you talking about? The economy is just great! 😉

The economy would suck no matter who was president, even Clinton.

Actually, companies are doing great...it's just their employees that are doing "poorly" (to say the least).

When you make a topic, you should tell us what your opinion is. No where in this thread have you stated why you think this occurs, instead its like a game of hot potato.

I live well below my means, most people just aren't happy with what they have.

Here's an interesting fact:

Industrialized countries tend to have a higher suicide rate than poor, developing countries.

It's because they're spoiled. Look at my reasons.

eh, from life experience I would have to say that poeple who have killed themselves the most I have known are the ones with christian upbringings and the guilt assosiated with normal life after being sheltered from it with opressive parents. Saying they are spoiled is a ignorant view, we have doctors and a whole psychitric institution who would argue that you are an idiot.
