This is by no means a thread against those who are athiest, believe what you want to believe. I was just curious about why there are so many athiests on the Internet? It seems like every other person I talk to on here does not believe in God. Again, that is fine with me, I was just wondering why...

Maybe it just surprises me because I live in a small town where everyone goes to church and I'm just used to assuming that all people believe.

Probably :) I'm atheist as are all my friends and most of the people I know - and I'm not just gravitating towards people like that. Just regular people I meet are not particularly religious.

actually i'm surprised there are as many christians here as there are.

i speak in generalities, be forewarned... i think the techie population in general is mostly atheist due to their scientific interests. and sure you can make an argument that science and religion can coexist, but lets face it, it ain't exactly peaches and cream.

yea that could be it too. i know some people like that and they're always amazed at my atheism and can't picture life without church.

i suggest that there is just a surplus of athiests in the general population. and most of them are computer literate.

<< Agnostic: Not to be confused with athiest, agnostic is the term used to describe those of "uncertain" belief in regards to Diety. Most agnostics will say that they believe in "something" but that it's too big, or too much for mere humans to understand. An atheist, by comparison, will say that God, in any form, does not exist. >>

no actually agnostic means you believe it can't be proved one way or another.

ag·nos·tic (g-nstk)
n.

1.a One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God.
b One who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism.

2. One who is doubtful or noncommittal about something.

the first two of which are pretaining to religion. no where in there does it mention believing in something "too big"

btw, here's the definiton from webster's:

a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unkown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.

Heh, someone once said, "I submit that we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do."

:D

As for my belief, I'm agonstically atheistic in a religious kinda way. ;)

here's the way i view atheist and agnosticism. agnosticism can be applied towards people of any religion. you can be chrisitan and still believe it's not provable. if i'm atheist and agnostic, it just means that i don't think it's provable, but i personally feel that there isn't a god.

Religious beliefs are for sheep
with limited powers of reasoning
(and right wing bigots)

;)

Let me rephrase that

Religious dogma is for sheep
with limited powers of reasoning
(and right wing bigots)

do "beliefs" include atheist ones? because i believe there is no god...

for some reason whenever i call christians "sheep" they get really pissed off. it made perfect sense to me though, i mean if jesus is the "shepard" and he's their leader, what does that make them?

My friend is an insomniac, dyslexic agnostic.
He lies awake all night wondering if there's a dog.
