Why are there scan lines when I play movies?

Some movies have them, some don't, how do I turn them off?

define scan lines.

It could be a number of problems. Are you watching the movie on your computer? Then what you are referring to might be tearing (google it). If you aren't watching it on your computer and there is tearing, then you are screwed.

If you are noticing these lines appearing in high motion scenes almost like the movie is split in two, then the problem is interlacing or Telecining (sp?). If on your computer then you need to enable a good interlacing filter (TomsMoComp for ffdshow does wonders for me). If not, your screwed 😛

So, a little more info about the problem, maybe a picture of it would be immensely helpful for diagnosing it.

It only happens with international DVDs, everything else is fine....

It only happens with international DVDs, everything else is fine....

Ah, then the problem is the fact that international DVDs are filmed at a different frame rate then you are. International DVDs are generally (but now always) filmed for PAL tvs, In the North america region we use NTSC.

I don't know how to get around it as I have never had that problem myself. You might look into signal converters or such (PAL->NTSC ect)

It's annoying because when I use WinDVD to play them, there are no lines but the screen is shaking....

when I use VNC to play them, the screen doesn't shake but you can see the lacing!
