Newfie has got it right. People get attached.

The SLI arguement in the OP is stupid, because it is a marketed towards those who don't care about money. I'm surprised however, that it took off as fast as it did. A lot of people with a lot of dough. The SM3.0 arguement is also stupid because SM3.0 is only good for those cards High End cards, at least in the generation where it was introduced. The midranged cards don't have the power to use the feature.

In a way it is almost like PS2 vs Xbox, while Nvidia and ATI both perform well in all games, some games perform exceptionally well due to their graphics engine. Doom3 for Nvidia and HL2 for ATI. This is where games take part and help define the video card. We all want more performance for the games we like.

I prefer Ati cards because I was disappointed by Nvidia during the FX debacle, and while Ati may take less chances, at least they have been consistently good lately. That does not make me a fanboy, and if Ati pulls off something like it's own FX cards, I'll switch over to Nvidia in a second, since they have been making decent cards lately with the gf6 series. I've owned both Ati and Nvidia cards in the past, and actually I liked Nvidia better than Ati in the gf4 days, but right now both seem to have good products.

I'm more concerned with the features and performance of the card, and how much performance for the money it offers, not which company made it. That being said, I'm glad we have 2 competing companies, because if it wasnt for the r300, Nvidia might have been the M$ of video cards by now, and we'd still be using rehashed versions of the gf4.

Actually Ati will always rule period.

I say period for one reason.

In the highpoint of Rainbow 6 on the Zone my Ati Radeon was a GOD CARD!!! Lets just say my server played many custom maps ;)

Many custom maps that had totally black areas, nothing like running around not being able to see three foot in front of you, unless of course you had an original Ati Radeon. :D For some reason you could see everything in the dark perfect and if you got close to walls you could actually see through them... And people called them bad drivers back in those days, more like bad to the bone heh.

Ahh the good old days.

And I did not do it for long, felt to bad with myself. Its a very amusing site watching people running around like chickens with their heads cut off and your the only one who sees everything going on. Made even funnier because when you first load the map you did not realize it was totally dark to everyone else and could not figure out how the heck they could not see you. But it was fun times :)

Edit: And for those that think I am being serious about the rule always period thing I am not, just a good lead off for my little story with the great drivers that Ati USED to make. heh.

SM 3.0 is more efficient than 2.0, though, isn't it? So even if you can't use the additional features, you turn them off and get better fps than with 2.0. :)

SM2.0 takes a huge performance hit. SM3.0 takes less of a performance hit, but it is still big. Too big for Mid-range cards. Take Splinter Cell for example, unless I play my 6600GT at 800x600, the game is unplayable.

If you have to turn em off, why bother with them. The point I'm making is why argue that it's a buying point if you are gonna end up turning it off.

Actually it depends on which features you mean, some of the 3.0 features are extremly taxing, as in like cutting your fps in half.

I don't understand it either.

I have no brand loyalty at all. I want the best I can get for my money be it Ati or Nvidia, AMD or Intel ect.........

It also depends on the game, if they let you choose between features. Some just say 2.0+ or soft shadows. For a buying point, there are very few games that support it and very few features that won't lower your framerates.

Its actually because I have a small weiner and need to feel superior in buying the biggest baddest card and making fun of others who dont agree with me.

Some just like certain brands hopefully from good experiences.

Some are just Duckheads who just want to annoy others because they have no one else to pick on.

But in reality its sadly only 2 players in the game instead of a half dozen.

3dfx, matrox, S3, diamond, creative, intel.
