Why are there no WRC events in North America?

I just was cruising around the FIA website, and came upon the schedule of events for 2002.

I noticed that the closest event to us is either in Argentina or Portugal. What's the deal here? We have so many great roads and beautiful terrain to support a WRC event, but there seems to be no support.

It's pretty shameful when a small country the size of Cyprus (nothing against them) can support a rally and 3 countries of our size and population can't even support one.

Shame, shame, shame, North America!

It is because the WRC races are nowhere near as challenging as 30 cars going left in a tight pack. Or at least that is what the NASCRAP supporters would have you believe.

LOL! The WRC even comes through New Zealand sometimes, man that is the highlight of the year when they do! And yeah, NASCAR is soooo boring, how can people even watch it? Over here we get the Aussie V8 racing, NASCAR racers would be Waaay out of their league racing against those guys.

The WRC is coming to Canada again so I've heard. It's been in the U.S. and Canada before but there wasn't much interest.

I thought WRC never came to the US because the demand just wasn't there. Americans would rather watch a bunch of cars circle a track 300 times or watch a land rocket on wheels go fast in a straight line. And besides WRC would problebly go bankrupt after all the lawsuits it would face from spectators being injured from accidents. :)

I don't like NASCAR, but F1 and CART racing is pretty damned cool. WRC won't make it big in the States because there isn't any direct competition between among the racers.

In CART you have several cars in a large pack jockying for position on a tight windy track - something you don't ever see in WRC. WRC reminds me of the Le Mans series. They both have monstrous tracks where all the cars are very spread out. There is no feel of competition. Personally, I'd rather watch the European Le Mans series over everything else, but that's just me.

Unless your are participating, WRC can be just as boring to watch as NASCAR.

There is a rally championship in the US! But not too many people go out to watch it because it's all on back roads in the woods. I like nascar and rally racing, both have excitment, just two different types of excitement. One is door to door racing full out, the other is flying around dirt roads trying not to overturn your car or hit a tree.

Ever seen a guy that can drift? In city streets?

...in a Mercedes?

Come to Vancouver and you will. :)

When I get my RSX Type-R, heheheh...it's over for all the street racers around here. I drove my friend's WRX too. Damn nice car and easy to drive but I like the styling of the RSX Type-R with the buckets and the MOMOness.

The FIA is looking into bringing a WRC event to where the Cherokee Trails SCCA pro rally is held. The FIA needs a large enough city within a certain distance to the rally in order to support the number of people the teams bring. I think the city needs be in excess of 30,000 people, not sure on that though. I went to the SCCA pro rally up on Bemidji, MN this year it was simply awesome! Nothing beats standing a foot off the road watching a WRX fly by five feet away with it's brake rotors so hot they're glowing in teh middle of the night, no joke. You can so close to everything. We talked to the Prodrive team's mechanics and drivers, stood a few feet away as teams swap turbos or trannys during services. Everyone was really friendly and willing to talk. I seriously recommend to anyone who has a chance to go to one, GO!

My Benz? No. Pretty stock other than the pedals (I hate pedals made of anything but metal) and my +20hp air freshener. :) But I can still waste a lot of cars around here since it is V6 and I drive like a maniac.

I will take on ANY car in a RSX Type-R...in a REAL race...not drag.

I agree, there has to be some agreement on the spectators and how to deal with any injuries.
