Why are there no levers to hold the gas pump handle in?

WTF? Well the lever is still there, just the metal risers to hook the lever into at ~3 different flow levels is removed. I thought it was just this piece of crap station I went to in Olean, but earlier today when I got gas, same thing; have to hold the handle in for the entire filling! I know you aren't suppose to walk away, but I've never had a pump not auto shutoff when nearly full, and I would usually be right by it anyway.

It this pretty common? I think it was the case when I stopped in Ohio on my way out here. Highly annoying. Michigan may suck, but at least they have that on their gas pumps. :)

Depends on the station here (NH) - some have working levers, and some have been disabled.

The shape of the gas pump handle and nozzle is funny. Makes me  every time I see a picture of one.

You can just put your gas cap in there instead, the auto-cutoff will stop it from overflowing.

They do have them. I just used it 20 minutes ago. I guess it depends on the station.

I notice the same thing too! As soon as i moved up here from texas, all the levers vanished. I always assume it was a weird safety thing.

That's illegal here.

I do it all the time - for years now. if it is on the books as a law then no one really cares to enforce it. i do it right in front of gas station attendants and cops. no one says anything

In some states it's illegal to leave your car unattended while filling up. NH is one of them, so is MA. However as some of you have noticed, it's a pretty laxly enforced law.

Hmm, I never really thought about it. I always thought that if the station "didn't have it" that it was just broken and they never bothered to fix it. This is in DE.

Because retards will do something stupid like get back in their car while it's pumping, and then you build up a bit of static electricity and BOOM your car is on fire. Women cause something like 80% of gas station fires, because they get back in their car while it's pumping then leave the door open when they get back out. Touching the door discharges the static electricity. Not touching the door means you discharge it next to your gas tank.

It's hit or miss whether they have them in PA, but I assume that's why they've been removed at the stations that don't have them. Every gas station in NJ has the clips, because we can't pump our own gas. :)

That's great logic except we don't exactly have a problem with static electricity here in Hawaii... and we don't have the retainer levers here either.

Meanwhile, in Alaska, where the static can build up enough to make your finger go numb when you turn on the lights, you're free to lock that sucker in place and hop back in your car.

I blame the liberals... Let's compare gas pump lever availability between blue states and red states. :p

Or they just drive off with the hose still in the car's filler hole. My former boss came in one day talking about how she'd pulled away from the gas station that morning with the hose still in the tank. Then she mentioned that this made the THIRD time she'd done that.

That pretty much explains all you need to know about why I listed "management" as my reason for leaving when I went into consulting.

My brother-in-law had an alcoholic roommate. One day the roommate woke up after a bender, went down to his car, and there was a nozzle and a few feet of hose hanging from his fuel filler. He didn't remember any of it.

I assume you mean got sprayed in the face with gasoline, although that doesn't really change my question. How exactly did you manage to do this?

LOL.

How do those things work out? Does the gas station track you down and make you pay the damages or do they just call the cops and give them the name/addy from the credit card?

Depends on how the transaction was done, I'd suppose.

When I was a kid driving with my mom we got rearended and pulled into a gas station, while waiting for the police someone drove away with the pump still in the car. Whoops.

The pump I always go to just had it's levers re-added.... something like 3 weeks ago!

This is in NH fyi, we lost our levers a long time ago so it was real cool to see them being re-added.
