Why are there no Japanese-esque rpgs for the PC?

Aren't all RPGs fantasy?

not really

Xenogears, Xenosaga, Star Ocean, Fallout, Deus Ex, System Shock, Arcanum (kinda)

They're Sci-fi, it's "fantasy" but not in the way in which an RPGer might associate with the word

Scifi isn't fantasy, contrary to the weird grouping in popular culture.. They are completely different genres, and just happen to both be fiction. And Xena is NOT science fiction!!

Septerra Core is kinda old school, but it's a Japanese-style PC RPG.

ugg that game sucked. I bought it because it was under 20$ and i think I lasted 2-3 days on it.
But to stay on thread I would consider it a Japanese-style pc rpg (If my memory serves me well)

Most Japanese RPGs have an absolutely linear storyling. They aren't real RPGs.

That's not a good way to define an RPG. In Morrowind there are side quests and the world isn't "linear", but the main story quest is.

I hate open ended story lines. You get a much better story out of a game like FF7 imo.

But that is bizarre that the Japanese don't play computer games. You would figure they would out of anyone, with the love of electronics and such.

Fallout.

And Japanese RPGs aren't fantasy? Pokemon isn't fantasy? Final FANTASY isn't fantasy?

Seriously, non-PC RPGs suck. They're almost all the same.

1. A nurse/your mom/your girlfriend wakes you up.
2. Someone important calls you.
3. Kill monsters summoned by the enemy boss, who was a childhood rival.
4. Meet thousands of female NPCs, all of which have purple hair and love you.
5. Unlock your ultimate power.
6. Win.

That sounds like a cool game, which one is it?

it seems like to me that even most console RPGs are fantasy themed. even FF7 is largely fantasy. The only true sci-fi ones that I know of are Xenogears (great game BTW) and the xenosaga series, actually even those are a bit of a stretch. it's a bit frustrating but I guess the masses just don't find sci-fi that exciting or something...

anyway I also prefer console-style RPGs much more because they actually have plots. on the PC I really like Deus Ex and KOTOR. some adventure games like the longest journey/dreamfall also have great plots.

How did you steal the plot to the game I'm designing? :|

Looks like you're going to get a visit from Square's ninjas!

Grandia 2, Final Fantasy VII, and Final Fantasy VIII were all ported to PC. You might need to check eBay for them since they are long out of print though.

You're saying RPG's are crappy, and you want one that's based on Japanese stuff----

so you want an RPG that's even worse? 😕

Xenogears is fantasy as well. Having giant robots in it just makes it a fantasy with giant robots. I suppose you could call all the cute anime monsters 'aliens' if it made you feel better 8)

Jagged Alliance 2 is probably the closest I've seen to a non-fantasy RPG, great game too. Unusually Ruthless Reuben's backstory makes me grin, even remembering it so many years later.

well, they do try to explain the "magic" with some technobabble about the "potential phenomenon engine" zohar, and the non-humans are results of genetic engineering. I'm not counting the monsters you see in battle b/c they had to make it "interesting" I guess. it is a bit of a stretch like I said, but I'm used to ignoring the parts I don't like in RPGs because most of them make very little sense if you look at everything, especially things from the game play.

Right. They are fantasy but there is some interesting sci fi thrown in as well. Straight fantasy with wizards and knights and stuff is so incredibly boring to me, I dunno why.
