adj. Involving, existing between, or connecting two or more states.

(btw... i know WHY... Any highway built under the auspices of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 and funded by the federal governent is called an interstate highway.... just seems kinda ... out of place.)

The interstate relates to the funding. It's "involving, existing between, or connecting two or more states" as in your taxes are involved and connected to paying for our three interstate highways.

BTW, Interstate H3 is probably the most beautiful stretch of interstate highway in the US.

Because, Hawaii wants its share of those federal highway dollars too...plus, with all the military bases on O'ahu, the federal government can legally take control over the Federal roads easier than they can over state-built roads.

The Interstate Highway System also extends to Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, even though these states have no land connections to other states. Those in Hawaii, all on the populous island of Oahu, carry the prefix H (e.g., Interstate H-1) and connect military bases, though they are open to public use.

The H nomenclature makes up for it.

Also recall that there exist a serious tsunami risk in Hawaii. A big reason for the Eisenhower Interstate system is to provide for transportation in the interest of Civil Defense. Thus the money to build the roads in tsunami prone areas came from the federal government.

When I worked on one of the cruise ships in Hawaii a new crew member asked if you could drive from island to island, and it was a series question.

It is amazing how stupid some of out high school graduates are when it comes to stuff like this.

Rapid troop movement, which all interstate highways designed were for. WW II, President Eisenhower, Cold War, Arms Race, etc.
