Why are there different electricity standards..?

I'm just wondering why there are different standards for electricity across the world, why can't it just be universal? Any particular reason? IIRC isn't 220V better than 110?

Systems were developed at different times, often with different technology being available. Conceivably people could all change, but then those countries not on whatever is being changed to would have to buy all new applicances and whatnot, or a converter. Now it is only a bother for travelers and manufacturers.

Then we'd need huge wires to carry the increased amperage. No easy way out. :)

and more amperage means more danger

220 is actually better than 110, but we started using that, so we'll stick with it...

We have 220 here, its only used for large appliances like water heaters. Doesn't matter for the rest of the house imo

well, its more effiecent to use a higher voltage and lower amps. safer too.

or is it less effiecent. gah. i've been up too late...

Efficiency is the same, wires can be thinner, doesn't matter in a home cause wires ok size already, a bit more dangerous too.

STFU NOOB

;)

:p When two right handed swordsmen are fighting they stand slightly to the left of middle because it's easier to strike the opponent, hence being on the left hand side. ;)
