Spaceships on tv and in the movies aren't designed to be realistic; they're designed to look good. Or downright creepy, like the Shadow ships in Babylon 5.

Star Wars and Star Trek ARE the Sci-Fi genre.

Righto...the any of the *-wings from Star Wars were used as atmospheric fighters as well as space fighters. An example, albiet a bad one, is Luke landing on Dagobah. Same goes as the TIEs. The bombers were meant to do surface bombing as well as launching torpedoes and such in space.

can someone explain to me why a B wing looks like a t?

Because it is compactible into an |.

But Tie Gunboat pwns B-Wing any day.
The Gunboat wasn't a TIE, it was just an Assault Gunboat. Of course, the Tie Advanced would pwn the Gunboat anyhow... ;)

Ion Cannon + Concussion missles =

Most Star Wars ships are capable of flying through atmospheres, but they obviously don't do it the same way that airplanes do. The Millenium Falcon flys through atmospheres several times and it's about as aerodynamic as a brick. You could overanalyze things and say that the reason the X-wing has wings is to get a greater spread with it's lasers, since it has one mounted on the end of each wing. However, the real reason these ships look the way they do is because people like to see badass looking spaceships on movie screens.

Because sitting in a silent theatre watching expensive shots of ships exploding sucks.

Bingo. They have landing gear for a reason. However, ships like the B-Wing aren't aerodynamic. :p

 Everything I can think of that determines good sci-fi, is embodied in Star Trek. I don't really see how anyone can say otherwise.

I'll go along with Star Wars not being Sci-Fi at all. I call it, cowboys and indians in space.

Space isn't a perfect vacuum. There are small particles that would create drag (if not outright destroy the ship) at decent speeds.

hahahahahh man you have horrible taste -with the exception of 2001: A Space Odyssey

The twilight zone series was damn good, especially for when it was made.

Yep, the old TZ episodes are still better than about 95% of what's on TV today.
