This is what I came to post. And it happens to be true. The Midwest and Mideast used to be closer together. Then the Mid-Atlantic Ridge came along.

I think of everything east of the Rockies and west of the Appalachians to be considered the midwest.

and wouldn't it be appropriate for them to be far apart, with everything in between considered the mid?

Spokane is the mid-east. Idaho is back east. Ohio, NY, etc. are the far east. Portland is down south. Cali is the dirty dirty south. Georgia, Arkansas, etc. are a third world country
