Why are the majority of quickie mart/7-11 owners indian/middle eastern?

anyone have any idea? is it a culture thing? i'm not sure if they're indian or middle eastern sorry if i offend anyone because i dont mean to. i'm just curious.
 
naw no way...i've been to at least 20 (underestimating) seven eleven/quickie marts and about 80-85% were being run by them

No its true. For a lot of the immigrants who come here, its just their badluck that they either a) arne't willing to work thier ass off and maybe study to get a better job b) are faced with bad luck of whatever reason c) using it has temp job in the night as they take college classes or work during the day.

A lot of hte indian immigrants who come here are stuck in those jobs because they aren't willing to work harder to go get a better job where their education can be used or they aren't able to work harder cause they are older or have some disabilities/medical condition/etc..

On the other hand, many might own the shop and many others and work their as well.
 
Those stores are the fastest way to the money. If one has it, he/she advices one of his buddies to get into the business also. But the work is just over the top hard (cleaning, stocking, loooooooon hours, no holidays). Not to mention the customers and dangers you have to face.
 
My dad told me a story about a friend needing a blank tape for a family get together when he was out of town. Only place that was open was a quickie mart and they didn't have any tapes. Just as my dads friend was walking out, one of the middle eastern guys came running to him with a tape for $4.95 and he explained he had borrowed it from the security system. Not sure if he bough it or not.
 
Well alot of taxi drivers and stuff have decent educations in india or whatever middle eastern nation their from. However the difficulty is that most of their degrees don't carry over to here, therefore it won't be uncommon to see a person with an engineering or science degree working as a taxi driver or at the quickie mart. However this isn't the case for many of them.

that sucks because i think in some cases the degrees over there are worth more than here...indians are smart! especially in computer science.
 
I know three indian people in my neighborhood. Only one of them owns a Seven Eleven Franchise. The way he tells it, one of his relatives had died in the Bopol(sp?) disaster, and his family was given close to $40,000 dollars upon entering the U.S. by Union Carbide. His family wanted to purchase a local establishment to keep the family working and pay the bills. So they bought a Named Franchise(7/11) and have owned it ever since, they've also bought a Getty Gas station and an AM/PM mini market/ Gas station. He said that his family chose 7/11 because their selling prices were relatively cheap and his family could share the labor among themselves. He also said that no one seemed interested in buying these franchises at the time his family purchased theirs, for status and safety reasons.

i noticed this too and i have no idea why it's like that. a similar thing could be questioned about asians owning dry cleaning places.
 
It's a Southern California thing. I grew up in LA and I agree, it's universally Middle Easterners or Indians who own the 24/7 convenience stores and gas stations.

MANY stereotypes in the Simpsons stem from life in the LA area. Why? Because all the writers live there. Trust me, the stereotype came LONG before Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.
