Whatever you do, dont buy the Win-HDTV card. Its the worst one you can buy and it costs the most. I have a Fusion HDTV II and it works well for me.

do you have to pay the cable company any extra for HDTV?

Only if they offer an HDTV receiver and package. For me, it's $2/mo. for the box and $7.50 for the HD Package (ESPN, Bravo, HDNet, HDNet Movies, Discovery Channel HD and soon InHD 1 and 2.) Locals that broadcast in HD come along for the ride as would HBO and/or Showtime if I were subscribed to those.

If you just want to pick up OTA signals, there's no cost other than the card/cables/PC.

If you want HD thru cable you WILL need the HD cable box from your cable company. For OTA (Over-The-Air) all you need is the HTPC or an HDTV with an integrated tuner.

Actually if your STB has QAM capability, you can get some HD over cable. LG should have some models hitting shelves soon that are QAM enabled. Of course it depends if your local CATV co does not encrypt their HD offerings. I believe that some Mits HD sets that have integrated HD tuners with QAM enabled as well.

True...I think Mits is the only one with that but I tend to shy away from integrated sets anyway.

Through cable you most likely get not only your locals (ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.) but HBO HD, Showtime HD and the others I mentioned (depending upon the packages to which you're subscribed.)

OTA you get your locals only with a decent antenna....but...it's free programming.

so basically, if i want to watch HDTV, im going to have to pay more to the cable company, and if i use a antenna, i can get HD, but it would depend on the quality of the antenna

What major city are you in and do you know roughly how far you are from the towers?

I think http://www.antennaweb.org can help you there. Unless you're in a valley with big trees all around or behind a hill or over 50 miles away, you should be ok with a decent antenna. And, depending on where you're at, a UHF-only antenna will probably suffice (they are a lot smaller)

well the thing is, i already have comcast cable. and i dont really want to use an antenna, so i guess im out for HDTV

Comcast doesn't offer HD where you live?

And, a $20 antenna from Radio Shack in your attic *may* work...did for me.
