Why are the GTX 580 prices going up?

I went to the Microcenter website and noticed the MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II Lightning shot up to $620 and a reference designed Zotac GTX 580 is now $570. These cards were about $100 less last week. The Newegg website does not list any GTX 580s under $500.

It's strange. I've noticed that all the higher end video cards seem to have gone up slightly in the past few months. Maybe it's because of the holidays shopping increase (either supply vs demand or gouging...)

... and wasn't there recently news that the 580 would be dropping in price very soon?

Take all those theories based on that 2 month old rumour of a 580 price cut and flip them. Chaose theory ! When have you ever heard of price cuts at Christmas.

Possible with all of the 2500k/2600k mobo deals that they have sold, they send out a 25% off coupon for a pci-e video card to those buyers and they're losing a lot of money from it. That's how I got my Zotac AMP GTX 580 for $343 a few months ago.

Went to frys for my new build this week and i saw a gtx580 for $489... if you got a frys nearby their prices are regularly $489-$499 for their evga models.

This. Plus, I've noticed that it is getting harder to find the vanilla cards any more, both for the GTX 580 and 570. Most of what is left are the superclocked versions, or those with alternate coolers or more memory, which would be higher priced anyway.

Holidays especially Christ-mas = Price gouging. The 580's have always varied in price some though [they are the best single card]. I got my Zotac 580 for 420 after MIR which im still waiting on..I would try Ebay if you really want one, buy from a high rated seller and your going to get good service 9 times out of 10.

Holidays. The rumored price cut for GTX580 didn't specify the timeline though. I would imagine the most realistic outcome is right around HD7970 launch (so Q1 2012), possibly January. Looking at Newegg, almost half of the 580s are sold out. With such demand, NV or its partners would feel no pressure to cut prices just yet. That's not to say the inevitable price cut on the 580 isn't coming. There is just no way for the 580 to remain at $450-500 as soon as 7900 series launches. The 580 is at best 15-20% faster than the 6970, and lower at 2560x1600. It's pretty much a sure bet hat 7900 will smoke it (as it should). This is one of the worst times to buy a videocard. Having the 480 being available for $175-200 and 5970 for $300 on Newegg is likely a good indication the current price levels are not sustainable.

I've noticed this too. It looks like the low prices peaked around september, then prices steadily went up. I remember there being several 580 brands selling around the 420-450 mark during that time frame.

Guess its the thailand flooding guys.

Latest rumors suggest that Nvidia will not have a 580 replacement until Q3 of 2012. So I bet people are buying the 580's now since they may be current longer than once thought.
