Why are tennis balls packed in those air tight can thingies? I always find it so fun to open a new package

isn't it to keep the balls fresh? if you keep the pressure in the cans, doesn't that also allow the balls to retain their pressure? if you've ever left a tennis ball sit in the open for a week, you know it will be flat and useless other than for maybe practice or for a dog.

Yep, dead balls have less bounce.
Of course, no one has the time or patience to keep the balls fresh, and it's such a waste to open a new pack each game. So the best answer is to just get used to playing with "dead" balls. My brother has a tennis court, and he just opened a sh!tload of balls and dumped them in the collection baskets for the kids to play with.
That way they can take the baskets full of balls out on the court, and not have to chase balls unil they're done.![]()
