Lazy bastard. You're so dramatic about it.... "slaving over weeds all afternoon". If mowing the lawn for 1.5 hours X 1 or 2 times a week is too much time or effort to have a neat living space, you need to get your fat ass off the computer and do some yard work. It only sucks to you because you don't appreciate it and probably abhor anything besides pecking away on your computer. Learn to appreciate your space and the work won't be so bad.

way to judge. I'm not lazy, fat, or messy, but if I had a yard, I'd see it for 5 minutes a day, as I walk from my car to the house.

it's not that it takes too much effort to cut the grass, it's just not an important factor to me; plus, I've always liked the look of "jungle" yards.

of course, it's worth mentioning that I don't own a house and don't ever plan to. so that problem is already taken care of ;)

forgive my naivety (sp?), but aside from it being the law/it looks nice, is there a benefit to mowing lawns? I just ask because I really don't see a point in mowing our backyard. No one in our family ever uses it, and our property is pretty heavily wooded so no neighbors can see in our backyard. I mean we still mow it just because if I'm mowing the front lawn I might as well go ahead and mow the back, but I don't really see the point...

Don't get me wrong, it's not like we don't do any yard work at all- our front lawn is a completely different story. My parents are constantly trying to make it look nice in order to keep our house presentable. My mom is extremely protective of her azaleas, and my dad has been trying to grow and maintain a healthy lawn in the front for years, but has been unsuccessful due to all the large trees blocking all the sunlight and rain. Our lawn is pretty much 80% moss...

1) Controls weeds
2) Doesn't give rodents and snakes a place to hide
3) Helps control insects and mosquitos
4) Good exercise. ;)

Yes, if you don't own a yard and don't plan to, then what I said doesn't apply to you. However, if you don't maintain your living space and don't take care of yourself, then I can still call you a lazy bastard and not feel bad about it ;)

I suspect he got a letter from our housing authority because one day he not only mowed it (back still a mess), but his wife did some other things. The guy next to us has a 4 foot weed/tree thing on the side of his house and wilf flowers on his front lawn. if he doesn't step up he'll get a letter too.

To me if you have a filthy lawn how is the inside of your house? Probably outrageous. I know it's just a yard, but I think that a poorly kept yard is indicative of one's lifestyle and they probably should be sent to a labor camp or something, so that they can learn a little respect for themselves.

I agree ! My oldman's yard is disgusting as is the inside of his house. When I was married we had an immaculate lawn which I took care of and my Ex-made the house spotless on the inside.

I definately judge people on the upkeep of their property.

what if I take care of myself but just don't consider the lawn a "living space" because I never step foot in it?

sorry to disappoint, but I'm a totally anal retentive bastird :p the only area of my apartment that isn't spotless is the kitchen sink (bad habit; the only time I eat in is after I come home from work, when I'm too tired from working all night to do the dishes), and of course, my roommate's bedroom. I haven't seen inside his room in a long time... I just assume it's a mess ;)

Right here, right now it is. It seems like the grass grows about an inch a day. Over summer, when it gets really hot and dries out a little, it won't grow so fast. But right now, especially with a bag mower (who leaves the clippings on the ground?) the lawn needs to be mowed twice a week.

twice a week?! who the fvck has time for that?! your insane, once every 2 weeks is fine in my book. if your soo obsessed then go mow his lawn for him.

Do you have any idea how long it would take to mow 1.5 acres if I had to bag it all? Shoot, I'd be emptying the grass catcher 3-4 times and I use a lawn tractor.

Bagging is just a bunch of extra work that only serves to rob the yard of good compost. As long as the clippings aren't in piles that will kill the grass, I let 'em go, even the piles I just rake out.

I bet that you'd have an uncontrollably compulsion to mow your lawn if you had one. And one day you will have one, even though you say you have no plans to.

A house behind us (their back yard runs into our back yard) doesn't share the same views of yard work. The older, fat bastard sits on his computer in the basement and comes outside and mows his front lawn once every two weeks (!!!!!) when the grass is about 10" high and does his backyard every month or two so the grass gets as high as 24".

My dad did some research and found out the city/county/state law or whatever stipulates that the grass should be maintained at 8" or lower in a lawn in a neighborhood, something like that. Don't quote me on the various requirements, but I'm pretty sure it was 8".

The city came out, or people they contracted, and cut the guys back yard (maybe 1/3 an acre) and gave some paperwork to him that probably said "mow your lawn".

What I don't understand is how people can neglect their living space... this guy doesn't maintain his body or health, doesn't maintain his unkept house, and doesn't maintain his yard.

GET THE F*CK OFF the computer and mow the lawn and lose your weight and clean your computer room and THEN get back on the computer.

whoa, scared me there for a moment. I had to check your profile and make sure you didn't live in Lawrence and were talking about me....

Do what I do if you have a rider. Raise the deck up 3/4 of the way and go over the furrows with the mower on this will dissapate the grass into a fine mulch.

Note: Does not work worth a sh!t if the lawn is wet.

well i hate doing yard work but all my neighbors have neat yards so I just hired a guy to come out and take care of the lawn so i wouldn't be the sh!tty neighbor that neglected their lawn. Its defintly not worth my time to spend 3 hours a week working to maintain a yard which i hardly care about anyway.

I solved the lawn problem. I don't water the lawn, unless it is scorching hot, then I'll water it at night. Then when its time to mow, I cut it to about 1"

I also really like moss and crab grass. I want to know where I can get crab grass seeds.

Here is why crab grass is better then real grass,

1. never have to cut it and it looks like grass from afar.
2. It is hearty and never have to water it.
3. if it dies, who cares! it's crab grass.

I do every once and a while.. usually once every 3-4 times of bagging. A little grass kept on the yard is good for it.

Normally there are only one or two places that have it pile up. I pull that stupid little deflector shield off my mowers so the clippings disperse pretty evenly. The only thing those shields do is make the deck clog more easily and make it harder to go around trees.

Gaah, when we buy a house I am putting one of those grasses in that only has to be cut a couple of times a year. I will not cut the grass twice a week. Especially seeing as I'll probably have a no life loser neighbor like you who will come out every day and measure the height of my grass.

I am truly sorry that your life is so uninteresting that wasting 3-4 hours a week on yardwork is not an intrusion into other pursuits. Regardless, you should learn to respect the fact that individuals have the right to have their own priorities in this country. It is called freedom...you may have heard of it.

Further more, I am quite glad that you are not in my neighborhood. People like you are half the problem in this country. Rather than take five minutes to walk over, introduce yourself to your neighbor, and simply ask that he mow a bit more often, you decided to call the authorities. Government intervention is not the answer to everything in life.

The sort of person who has a yard in this state is the sort of person who would respond to Red's comment with a "F@(k off and mind your own business.".

Perhaps, but you will never know unless you talk to the guy. Many people might not even realize that people would care.
