Why are some people so lazy that they do not do yard work?

My family takes a lot of pride in keeping a nicely manicured lawned and we love to grow vegetables in our garden. A house behind us (their back yard runs into our back yard) doesn't share the same views of yard work. The older, fat bastard sits on his computer in the basement and comes outside and mows his front lawn once every two weeks (!!!!!) when the grass is about 10" high and does his backyard every month or two so the grass gets as high as 24".

My dad did some research and found out the city/county/state law or whatever stipulates that the grass should be maintained at 8" or lower in a lawn in a neighborhood, something like that. Don't quote me on the various requirements, but I'm pretty sure it was 8".

The city came out, or people they contracted, and cut the guys back yard (maybe 1/3 an acre) and gave some paperwork to him that probably said "mow your lawn".

What I don't understand is how people can neglect their living space... this guy doesn't maintain his body or health, doesn't maintain his unkept house, and doesn't maintain his yard.

GET THE F*CK OFF the computer and mow the lawn and lose your weight and clean your computer room and THEN get back on the computer.

The paperwork they handed him was a bill.

A very steep bill.

He'll quickly learn to mow his own lawn when presented with bills like that.

Right here, right now it is. It seems like the grass grows about an inch a day. Over summer, when it gets really hot and dries out a little, it won't grow so fast. But right now, especially with a bag mower (who leaves the clippings on the ground?) the lawn needs to be mowed twice a week.

Just think some day you will have a house of your own and be able to call in reports on your neighbors too :)

My yard(or lack there of) is so shaded that it probably grows about 12 all summer:p

Short grass is thirsty grass. The dude is just trying to conserve water and help everyone else out. So, is your dad against the environment?

Damn man are you sure on your inches? My lawn generally is 1-2 long. I have to mow it once a week in the height of summer. Most of the people on my street are good with their lawns. 1/4 of the people are neglectful to different degrees. One guy had a jungle of weeds on his lawn. We called him jungle boy. I suspect he got a letter from our housing authority because one day he not only mowed it (back still a mess), but his wife did some other things. The guy next to us has a 4 foot weed/tree thing on the side of his house and wilf flowers on his front lawn. if he doesn't step up he'll get a letter too.

To me if you have a filthy lawn how is the inside of your house? Probably outrageous. I know it's just a yard, but I think that a poorly kept yard is indicative of one's lifestyle and they probably should be sent to a labor camp or something, so that they can learn a little respect for themselves.

Those city ordinances on lawn height are there to prevent rodents from taking up residence. Personally I would of snuck in at night with a few gallons of Roundup and took care of his lawn for him.

Uhh..

If he got off his computer to go work on something as superficial as a yard he wouldnt be able to hit the next level in Everquest.

Also, he will need to spend time away from being on IM.

Leave the guy alone.

jerk.

Oh you devil, I do like that idea :) I was somewhat tempted with jungle boy's lawn to pick up some of his bigger weeds and lay them nicely on his doorstep for him.

yard work sucks.

just because you enjoy slaving over weeds all afternoon doesn't mean that everyone else does. if you enjoy doing yard work so much, and you're so upset by it, why don't you mow their grass yourself?

Exactly, that's the point of my post. A lot of people try to *justify laziness and lack of self image* and say that keeping a nice lawn/yard/house/desk/etc. is cosmetic and unnecessary, etc. I think it's very indicative of their lifestyle and lack of maitenance and care for their living space.

My neighbor's husband has been gone for over a year out of country somewhere (I don't pry so I really don't know what the situation is) and she's had to try and take care of her yard by herself while trying to take care of a toddler and a sick mother. She's been renting the house out to a lady and son while she has stayed at her mother's. So, needless to say, she hasn't taken care of her yard. It is absolutely covered in weeds and was getting overgrown. I went into her backyard the other day and found a small family of rabbits in some tall grass.

I'm mowing her yard when I mow mine now to help her out and to help control growth into my yard. I'm going to buy some weed killer and fertilizer for her yard soon. It is worth the little extra expense and effort (.25 acre lot) to keep my yard looking nice and to help her out.

Lazy bastard. You're so dramatic about it.... "slaving over weeds all afternoon". If mowing the lawn for 1.5 hours X 1 or 2 times a week is too much time or effort to have a neat living space, you need to get your fat ass off the computer and do some yard work. It only sucks to you because you don't appreciate it and probably abhor anything besides pecking away on your computer. Learn to appreciate your space and the work won't be so bad.

For one thing it's the law, and for a second thing it lowers one's property value if their neighbor next door keeps a forest for a garden.

You're a good neighbor! Luckily, we get along with neighbors on both sides of us, so when they go on vacation, we'll mow for them / feed their pets / etc, and when we're gone they do the same for us.

Don't forget to transplant the rabbits before you mow ;)

Oh yeah - the lawns on my street take about 30 minutes TOPS to do front and back, and the front can be done in 10 :)

My wife and I have done that with a house about 4 houses down from us. They had a couple really tall ones that we ripped out and put in front of the door and garage.

Oh, they took off when I stepped near the shin-high grass to look over the fence into my backyard before I started mowing. All I saw was three fuzzy brown butts fly out her gate. I don't know what happened to them after that. I'll assume they made a home in another unmaintained backyard in my neighborhood. :)
