Why are some people so clueless when it comes to cars?

There's a woman I work with who drives a fairly nice Mercedes with performance wheels/tires and I was looking at her car yesterday afternoon when I noticed that all 4 tires were almost completely bald (we're talking about 1mm of tread depth-at least they were worn evenly). I mentioned this to her and she seemed shocked to learn this. She asked me if that might cause her to slide when the roads were wet.

Duh...

most americans are like this, they have someone else do everything for them. so why should they pay attention to the little things. its the downfall of american society i think.

PICS 😀

My old lady is the same way... Noticed yesterday that the inside of her driver/front tire was bald. I asked her why hasn't she gotten it changed, her response "you said I just needed to get them rotated, but I haven't had time" my response "THAT WAS 6 MONTHS AGO!"

That's ridiculous. I'm an American and most people I know (other Americans-what were the odds???) aren't like this.

In fact, the woman in question is from the Philippines.

 My wife is like that too. I was following her one day (years ago) and noticed what looked like mud on the inside edge of both rear tires. When I checked after we stopped I noticed it was the steel belt showing through!!! I made her drive it right down to the tire shop to have 2 new tires put on it.

I took my cool car to work one day and me and a dude were checking it out under the hood when another person we work with walked up. The convo:

"What's that round thing right there?"

"It's the air filter"

"Why do you have it?"

"Because the stock airbox wasn't giving the engine enough air"

*puzzled look* "Engines need air?!?!"

lol

I was going to say its because they don't have a huge love for cars and don't care...but then you said she bought a mercedes. That is retarded. Its like those guys that spend 5K on an alienware rig and then use it to check email and play the old copy of quake 1 they had lying around.

Oh please, don't be so dramatic. Ever consider that the reason people are clueless are because they don't have time or interest to learn? I'm sure there are a bunch of stuff that you are clueless on as well.

PWNT!

Don't be a hater j00fek.

1) It is impossible and inefficient to try to know everything. There is no logical reason that everyone needs to know cars. In fact, it is economically better for many people to not know cars. Specialization in narrow fields is better than attempting to have everyone know just a little of everything.

2) Because those people who work on cars as a profession are far too often clueless. How can you expect those who aren't in the field to be any better?

It's the same reason the average person has 30000 viruses and spyware on their PCs. They don't know any better and don't care to know any better. As long as it's "working" to them (i.e. still turning on) there is nothing wrong.

fixed.

That's women for ya. To them a high performance luxury automobile is no different than the blender or the garage door opener. Push a button and it does what you want it to and you never have to really worry about maintaining it. Putting in gas is like plugging it in and that's about as much as they know.

**Disclaimer** = I know this is going to piss off women but I see it far more often than not. I realize not every woman is like this but they are few and far between. And yes, there are some men, though seemingly more rare, who are just as clueless.

The Mercedes only confirms it. She is obviously a sheep, buying whatever happens to be most popular

I was thinking about this as well. There are people who don't take the time or effort to learn basic preventive maintenance on things they depend on working. That's why there are businesses that make good money from people who don't properly maintain what they own and often rely on. An ignorant person is a service technicians best friend.

You assume that she would have bought a Mercedes because she has a love for cars. Bad assumption, as people buy them for a number of reasons: percieved value, appearance of wealth, etc..

I wouldn't be too quick to say 'obviously a sheep', it's just how some people value their time. Some people like to spends a lot of time researching before making a purchase, while others don't care about every little detail of what their buying.

It's similar to changing your oil, some feel it's worth their time to do it since it's easy while others don't want to hassle with it ...

I am an American, and aside from checking the oil and keeping air in the tires I know very little about my car. I don't ever plan on knowing much more than that because it really has no interest to me. I doubt my lack of knowledge on a car is the downfall of civilzation though.

i disagree, it's something you use everyday and if anything, it's more economical to learn the basics since an oversight like this can cause an expensive crash not to mention liability if someone else sues your dumbass.

A person like that also probably never bothered to check tire pressure, so it's likely low, making it doubly so that this is a disaster waiting to happen.

Well, the tires were evenly worn so tire pressure and alignment is likely okay.

I agree with you on the accident waiting to happen though.

There's no logical reason for someone to know cars? Know cars to what extent? Knowing enough to notice when your tires are as bald as a baby's bottom could easily prevent an accident, so I think there is a logical reason to know that much.

This lady probably isn't used to having performance tires. She probably expects her tires to last her 40-60k miles instead of 20k.
